Macrobiotics helps you to live your life...

[Wed Feb 15 17:03:20 PST 2006] jessica_porter

a big life.

[Wed Feb 15 17:03:39 PST 2006] jessica_porter

What does big life mean to you? How do we make our lives "bigger"? What is it to live a big life?

[Wed Feb 15 17:04:03 PST 2006] jessica_porter

What are the techniques we can use to squeeze this life like a lemon and get all the great juice out of it?

[Wed Feb 15 17:04:19 PST 2006] jessica_porter

[Wed Feb 15 17:04:34 PST 2006] jessica_porter

How does mb help and hinder that?

[Wed Feb 15 17:04:40 PST 2006] jessica_porter

yes.

[Wed Feb 15 17:04:52 PST 2006] jessica_porter

I can get obsessed with food. I don't like that.

[Wed Feb 15 17:05:00 PST 2006] sahaja

[Wed Feb 15 17:05:16 PST 2006] jessica_porter

But ask whatever you like. That's just where I'm coming from

[Wed Feb 15 17:07:16 PST 2006] gadgee(Q)

Jessica, I presume you are out on the road some of the time. Is interest in mb waxing or waning would you say?

[Wed Feb 15 17:07:16 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

I'd say it waxing. I don't know why I say that, just my feeling

[Wed Feb 15 17:08:20 PST 2006] RebeccaG

Working at the health food store- I'd say yes, a bit of a waxing interest!

[Wed Feb 15 17:08:39 PST 2006] klara(Q)

what about guilt, which of course sucks? when you know you're not supposed to eat....for big life?

[Wed Feb 15 17:08:39 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

I struggle with guilt myself. Too much macro education can get in the way of just living. But I try to put my energy in my life and say "what am I doing in this moment to add to my existence, to this moment, to the people I love" and that tends to make the guilt go away. Life is short.

[Wed Feb 15 17:09:46 PST 2006] RebeccaG

I want to interest people in the idea of mb as more than the food- what you just said is great- to love the path

[Wed Feb 15 17:10:14 PST 2006] LavenderJane(Q)

What is the best way to begin a macrobiotic lifestyle when you are used to eating crap all the time?

[Wed Feb 15 17:10:14 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

I just did it a meal at a time. Sometimes I think it's difficult, literally difficult, to tolerate the clean consciousness that MB eating brings. It can feel too clear, almost boring, and like "what do I do with this clear mind?". I know how to be neurotic and afriad, what do I do with clarity? So take it easy and do things like yoga, work on self, service, to learn how to handle the clarity.

[Wed Feb 15 17:11:18 PST 2006] betty_tbc_009

Yeah...I find that I have been wandering a little(or a lot) from that...and I dont have any clarity...this maybe why I cannot think to do my school work

[Wed Feb 15 17:11:20 PST 2006] sahaja

For sure, one guy told me he had to drop it because he felt too naked in this world - too fine, like china that was about to break

Hasn't the cliche of "big life" really had it's day?

[Wed Feb 15 17:11:36 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

I dunno. I feel like Big Life makes sense to me. Because the important things in life--people, work, travel, education, Nature, etc. just get bigger and deeper. So it has always worked for me. What do you mean by it as a cliche?

sea salt, but also that they are baked flour. Baked flour causes dryness, stiffness, irritates the liver.

[Wed Feb 15 17:25:30 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

That's good question. I have gone outside of MB to get help with food issues. Support groups. Meditation. I think some people in MB are really normal around food and others are really obsessed. I needed out of the MB community to heal that stuff because it was just all about food. Life's more than that.

How much is too much pressure cooking?

[Wed Feb 15 17:28:49 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

That's different for everyone. Most people when they're first beginning can handle pressure cooking like, 3 times a week. But later, you need to ask your body/intuition what it wants. It will tell you, because pressure cooking creates...pressure. It makes you feel intense, energized, forward-moving. Know that, so that when you boil, you may feel a difference. It's about what you want for your life and who you want to be. I am a nicer person when I boil things and only need pressure cooking when I really need to get soemthing (usually physical) done.

[Wed Feb 15 17:31:00 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

You might be asking the wrong person. I just make it to the gym for 20 minutes three times a week. Not a huge athlete. There are some athletes who are macro, and I would assume they take in more protein and intense cooking styles like pressure cooking/ deep frying/ and probably some fish. Also a little more salt. But don't quote me on that.

[Wed Feb 15 17:31:57 PST 2006] gadgee(Q)

Well we hear all the time "big life" but with so many cancers and other problems within the community isn't it becoming clear that the "big" is not a word that goes with mb's?

[Wed Feb 15 17:31:57 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

I dunno. I'm not sure that "big" excludes disease. I'm seeing that disease may be part of the journey for many people. Not to be judged, I guess.

[Wed Feb 15 17:33:07 PST 2006] jessica_porter

In moderation becuase every food has a particular energy and you don't want just one energy. Change is really important to keep your body/life flexible. But experiment and find out. Try rice for a week. Then millet. SEe if you feel a difference. I COULD BE WRONG!!

[Wed Feb 15 17:33:08 PST 2006] sahaja

I am trying to help a friend who has colitis, a very bad case of it and the Doctors are talking about taking out his large intestine. He has asked his doctor if it would be ok to try eating changes so we went shopping on Saturday. He feels overwhelmed over everything, even something as simple as eating brown rice. Any advice as to how to start him in the right direction without overwhelming him?

[Wed Feb 15 17:36:08 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

Unfortunately (or fortunately) people with major health conditions should probably change more quickly than slowly. I would just let him know that the first week or so may be very uncomfortable. Support him in that. Maybe cook for/with him. Let him get to the point where he's feeling good. That's when it gets addictive. I dunno. Phone calls to hear him yell/complain/cry as he discharges? Unconditional love, if you can give it. And food support. It's not easy.

[Wed Feb 15 17:45:38 PST 2006] sahaja

and once again, it is more than just the food/diet part

[Wed Feb 15 17:45:40 PST 2006] TM

well, ive been on MB for about 2 weeks now and all of a sudden my symtoms have gotten very servere, has anyone experienced such things?

[Wed Feb 15 17:46:02 PST 2006] todd_r

Yes

[Wed Feb 15 17:46:10 PST 2006] jessica_porter

Have you seen a counselor, or are you doing it yourself?

[Wed Feb 15 17:46:10 PST 2006] marica

that happends when you switch to a new diet

[Wed Feb 15 17:46:23 PST 2006] TM

ive went to a counselor and she's monitoring me, but this is really werid, ive been in a lot of pain

[Wed Feb 15 17:46:37 PST 2006] TM

do you know how long it lasts?

[Wed Feb 15 17:46:46 PST 2006] marica

some people loose a lot of weight.. it's their process of cleansing

[Wed Feb 15 17:46:51 PST 2006] jessica_porter

I would talk to your counselor about that. May be normal, may be a problem. She should be able to help you.

[Wed Feb 15 17:47:11 PST 2006] jessica_porter

Hard to tell from a chat room. Sorry.

[Wed Feb 15 17:47:12 PST 2006] TM

yea ive lost 10lbs already, but i was only 110 so i feel so weak

[Wed Feb 15 17:47:28 PST 2006] jessica_porter

But Marica is right. It can be dramatic/extreme at first. Soemtimes scary.

[Wed Feb 15 17:47:37 PST 2006] TM

really? thats interesting

[Wed Feb 15 17:47:51 PST 2006] marica

everybody get different symptoms..

[Wed Feb 15 17:48:03 PST 2006] jessica_porter

absolutely. Your body may be freaking out from the big changes. But definitely check in with the counselor.

[Wed Feb 15 17:48:27 PST 2006] TM

haha great, you're right this is very difficult....especially when i'm always sooooo hungry

[Wed Feb 15 17:48:39 PST 2006] TM

thank you so much

[Wed Feb 15 17:49:13 PST 2006] marica

In that case, Jessica, do you recomend more smaller meals during a day?

[Wed Feb 15 17:49:31 PST 2006] leigh(Q)

how do you see people into macrobiotics seeming to need more connection with other macrobioitic people, how to deal with that if not in an area with like minded people

[Wed Feb 15 17:49:31 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

I guess chats are helpful. Also books. Maybe work on a friend and start cooking with one another. I want to make a series of DVDs that people can use in th eir communities. Keep on truckin'

[Wed Feb 15 17:50:18 PST 2006] jessica_porter

Hunger is normal. Have snacks available or eat more, smaller meals. Whatever works to keep you MB in the beginning is okay, I think. Good quality snacks, though.

[Wed Feb 15 17:50:23 PST 2006] marica

great idea, jessica. Nobody has DVDs out.

[Wed Feb 15 17:50:24 PST 2006] TM

i think connecting with other people has probably been the hardest part when the rest of the world looks at you like your crazy

[Wed Feb 15 17:52:01 PST 2006] chick

Don't worry asbout what other people think. They're all popping pills the doctor gave them.

[Wed Feb 15 17:52:12 PST 2006] marica

others doesn't matter... don't worry about them.. think about your health

I just started MB and am curious to know how I'm going to get enough protein

[Wed Feb 15 17:52:19 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

They say in MB that it's actually hard to be protein-deficient. It comes in many foods and we don't need as much as the standard american diet says. But, I would say, eat what you feel like eating (as long as you're healthy) and just learn from it. How do you feel after lots of protein? After a little? It can be heavy and hard to digest. Listen to your body.

[Wed Feb 15 17:52:27 PST 2006] TM

actually im going going away to the kushi institute im really excited

[Wed Feb 15 17:52:42 PST 2006] todd_r

haha yea im a little scared of all the snow

[Wed Feb 15 17:53:57 PST 2006] marica

their program will put you on right track.. it is very good for beginners

[Wed Feb 15 17:53:57 PST 2006] RebeccaG

how so Todd?

[Wed Feb 15 17:54:01 PST 2006] todd_r(Q)

what do you think of those japanese electic rice cookers. Are they any good?

[Wed Feb 15 17:54:01 PST 2006] jessica_porter(A)

I think they're cool for convenience, but not great energetically. Use them in a pinch, but don't get addicted. Electricity in food is electricity in your body.

[Wed Feb 15 17:54:13 PST 2006] jessica_porter

Way to Health is great.

[Wed Feb 15 17:54:22 PST 2006] jessica_porter

[Wed Feb 15 17:54:43 PST 2006] jessica_porter

At the K.I.?

[Wed Feb 15 17:54:45 PST 2006] TM

thank you, that makes me feel better

[Wed Feb 15 17:54:53 PST 2006] marica

that Kozinski says too

[Wed Feb 15 17:55:10 PST 2006] todd_r

yes men at the ki

[Wed Feb 15 17:55:10 PST 2006] marica

diet is too narow

[Wed Feb 15 17:55:39 PST 2006] jessica_porter

Keep in mind that the men at the KI (most of them ) don't cook for themselves and have been eating that food (very yang) for many years. The women have been cooking and the men who cook look better. Cooking for self (at least some of the time) is vital.

[Wed Feb 15 17:55:57 PST 2006] jessica_porter

Keeps you in touch with your own needs.

[Wed Feb 15 17:56:05 PST 2006] jessica_porter

Keeps you connected to intution.

[Wed Feb 15 17:56:09 PST 2006] jessica_porter

Helps you to yinnize yourself

[Wed Feb 15 17:56:20 PST 2006] jessica_porter

But too much cooking can make you too yang too.

[Wed Feb 15 17:56:25 PST 2006] jessica_porter

Too much concentration on self.

[Wed Feb 15 17:56:25 PST 2006] TM

how is the food very yang there?

[Wed Feb 15 17:56:34 PST 2006] todd_r

yes how?

[Wed Feb 15 17:56:36 PST 2006] jessica_porter

Too much heat and concentration.

[Wed Feb 15 17:56:55 PST 2006] RebeccaG

John Kozinski and many other mb guys have balanced and look great- sometimes in healing they have to loss a lot of "old" stuff

[Wed Feb 15 17:57:02 PST 2006] todd_r

heat in the chinese medicine sense or as in hot heat?

[Wed Feb 15 17:57:13 PST 2006] LavenderJane

I gotta go but thanks Jessica for the great book and all the helpful info.

[Wed Feb 15 17:57:34 PST 2006] jessica_porter

It follows the standard diet, which is fine for a while. But no one needs the standard diet every day for months or years. You need to find your diet. For your life. That would probably be very different. Maybe more vegetables. Or more sweets. Or less grain. Or less salt. There are lots of factors.

[Wed Feb 15 17:57:40 PST 2006] LavenderJane

Thanks for facilitating Gary

[Wed Feb 15 17:58:29 PST 2006] jessica_porter

When you hang out in front of fire for hours every day, it becomes drying and yangizing. Literally.

[Wed Feb 15 17:58:39 PST 2006] jessica_porter

I like to cook every other day
