Modern-day diets high in hydrogenated vegetable oils instead of traditional animal fats are implicated in causing a significant increase in heart disease and cancer. (http://www.peg.apc.org/~nexus/OilingAmerica.1.html [© 1998 by Mary G. Enig, PhD MGEnig@aol.com & © 1998 by Sally Fallon SAFallon@aol.com] ) Over the years Bob watched various people leave the macrobiotic movement and go back to the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.) or versions thereof. Just recently a friend of his, Ric, after more than 20 years of being in the center of the movement and on the fringe, decided that grains and vegetables did nothing for him and eating bacon, eggs, butter, coffee and sugar satisfied his needs while he worked as a carpenter. Ric continues to think in traditional Chinese/Japanese oriental philosophies such as Chinese astrology and 9 (Star) Ki. Ric got into macrobiotics back in the late sixties in Boston (when there was a macro center run by you-know-who on Columbus Avenue) and followed the great one all the way til possibly last week. What's going on? I hear of people occasionally binging on eggs and bacon or coffee and donuts but with the advent of the recent deaths of many notable macrobiotic teachers and personages, some of who professed that macrobiotics promoted longevity (one noteable fly-fisherman had the goal of living to be 100 but didn't make it to the age of 80!) it seems that more and more people are losing the faith in the diet and returning to some form of the S.A.D. fold. And then you have Sally Fallon, author of the book: "Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats" (with Pat Connolly, Mary G.
