I have just read an article in my Scottish newspaper about why it is legal to sell foods with bugs in it. Rat droppings ,rodent hair, maggots to name but a few are in foodstuffs. The guidelines are approved by the US Food and drug Administration. Most of the food items mentioned I wouldn't use anyway but in wheatflour 8mg of rat droppings are allowed, raisins are allowed 34 fly eggs per 215 grams and peanut butter 101 insect fragments per 340g jar. Does anyone know if these levels apply to organic food or do higher standards apply. Or am I just worrying too much!! |
