Bruce- I was lucky enough to have a very close friend in college whose background included macrobiotics. That was in 1984. I picked up a lot from her, and read a book on macrobiotics (I think it was called The Macrobiotic Way, by M. Kushi.) I loved a lot of the foods and ate them some of the time for many years (although I ate a lot of crap, too). Last year I was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, stage 0 breast cancer. Back to the books, time to look for a counselor, time to get serious. I have an advantage in that the language, the paradigm, the foods are all at least somewhat familiar to me. If I were starting this lifestyle cold it would probably be too much to handle. |
