Today's SF Chronicle has a very disturbing lead story about agricultural biotechnology. It seems that 40% of ALL corn planted this year was genetically modified. Soybeans,and potatoes are close behind, with the industry pushing for more, the US government's top scientists have concluded that there is no side-effect from introducing genetically-altered vegetables and fruits into the enviornment. In other words, turning our natural world into a scientific playground, using us as guinea pigs, does not raise one eyebrow on the faces of those in charge of protecting our food supply. The government has given this industry the green light to continue, as well as assurances that no labeling will be required. In other words, they've sold us out for $$$$$$$. |
