A pinch of salt

Hi everyone,

I remember a discussion back at the old Mountain Ark haunt regarding the mineral content of various sources of unrefined sea salt. I was wondering if anyone out there has a record of it.

I have found a (supposedly) reputable source of local (!!!) unrefined sea salt. It has been embraced by many macro/wholefood enthusiasts here in Australia and I have been using it for several weeks with no untoward effects. However before making a long term commitment to a salt (it is of course a major life decision - choosing university courses felt less challenging!).

I would greatly appreciate any advice regarding the criteria I should employ regarding the choice of a salt.

The mineral content of the Australian one is clearly stated on the container, it is a white colour and is unground (I have a ceramic/stone grinder or use a suribachi)

My other question regards the yin/yang quality of various minerals. Can anyone recommend a good reference source on this topic? Having studied science as well as the philosophy of science I see the many ways that the popular, secular western approach to it is incomplete and flawed, but I was wondering how to reconcile a certain point before dicarding this burning question of mine altogether. I have thought long and hard about it and perhaps that is why I have not been able to find the answer: According to modern physiology calcium is a muscle contractor, whereas magnesium has been dubbed the great relaxer. Why then would a high magnesium content of a particular variety of salt make it more yang?

Magnesium deficiency or perhaps rather a utilisation problem seems to be rampant here in Australia. Besides strengthening digestion with compresses does anyone have any experience with this? I am devoted to the compress method, but was wondering how patient one must be or what can be done in the meantime.

I am also keen to learn more about acid/alkaline. I have read Hermain Ahaira's classic but was wondering if anyone could offer some personal persectives especially with (for the time being) chronic conditions that foster acidosis (in my case diabetes).

Many thanks

Ilanit
