: Second time I've had shingles. I'm 58 and had lung
cancer almost two years ago, had a lobe in left lung removed and 25 days of
radiation therapy. Had radiation pneumonitis for almost a year and wound up with
what looks like chronic asthma (mild occurs only with excessive exercise or
walking up stairs carrying pkgs.) Have adrenal insufficiency and cannot get off
small dose of prednisone. While having this shingles episode now am on 40 mg a
day of prednisone for 7 days. My regular dose of prednisone 5 mg per day.
: Shingles are located on my back (upper) and around my incision from lobe
removal incision is located below shoulder blade to middle of back.
: Must be some connection but dr. unwilling to speculate.
: thanks for listening.
Yes, the anti-cancer drugs you took for your lung cancer, along with your
compromised immune system (chronic asthma) this is definately enough to
stimulate the Shingles virus. Keep eating your whole grains and organic veggies,
along with the afore-mentioned suggestions for curing shingles outbreaks and you
will soon overcome the problem. I hope this helps. In peace, Roy
: : : : : : : : Hi Bruce. Shingles (herpes zoster) is a viral infection of the
central nervous system that affects the sensory nerves of the skin on (usually)
the chest and one side of the body. The skin develops painful, red blisters at
specific nerve routes and the rash stays for as long as 3 weeks. Other symptoms
include mild chills, fever, body pain, intestinal pain, nausea, diarrhea and
itchiness.
: : : : : : Shingles is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox
(varicella-zoster). It may lie dormant in the spinal cord until triggered by
stress, anti-cancer drugs, or any of a number of immune deficiency diseases. One
attack (like chicken pox) usually provides immunity against recurrance.
According to macrobiotic understanding, the actually root cause of shingles
(that which atracts the virus) is excess animal protein which causes
putrefication inside the intestinal tract which suppresses the immune system.
Even vegetarians whose parents ate animal food may also develop shingles (and
chicken pox). Thus avoiding too much animal food and keeping the immune system
strong are good measures for avoiding both.
: : : : : : Allopathic protocol for treatment of shingles is to relieve the
itching and pain by using gentle washing techniques and use of antiviral drugs.
From a macrobiotic stand, it would be most beneficial to avoid the use of animal
protien altogether and to avoid the extreme yin energetics that trigger the
activation of the virus. Thus a blad diet of whole grains and veggies, small
amount of beans, miso soup, etc. would be helpful. No flour products, oils
(especially peanuts) nut butters, alcohol or dairy should be used during this
time. In addition, colloidal oatmeal (Aveeno) rice bran or corn starch water (or
bath) should be used for relief and drying of external symptoms (and itching).
Green clay mixed with a small amount of tea tree oil, garlirfit during this time
are osha root, St Johnswort and lemonbalm (all anti viral and immune system
enhancers). FOr your friend who is not macrobiotic I would recommend the
standard bland diet, aveeno baths, and cortisone (pills or injection) if needed.
Try not to itch as it will cause scarring. I hope this helps. In peace, Roy
: : : xxxxxxx- Sorry about the mess, I'm not too hot on computers- (YET!)
I've had shingles, seriously painful, on my back-; While in Barbados I nearly
drowned at sea (trying to surf) and thus got very sunburnt...er yang? On a spot
where the burn was worst I developed a scorching case of singles, three weeks
later. It feels hot and nasty.
