: : : Hi Everbody,
: : : Could you please tell me if the clockwise direction is a yin one or a yang one? Bruce

: : Sure Bruce. If you are walking in a circle, especially on a spherical planet with a central sun, the clockwise direction would be yang. You can also say the right side, as depicted in the Early Heaven Sequence of the I Ching, in which all the bottom lines of each graph are solid (yang). The right side or right movement correlates with the eastern cardinal point, or the place where the sun rises (li). The left, or west is the place where the sun sets, bringing darkness (yin, the hexagram Kan). If you have a spiral with one end pointed and the other end expanded, the pointed or contracted tip would be yang (like a top). In this case if you are travelling toward the expanded end you are moving away from the center in a yin direction, regardless if you are going left or right. Most drill bits are carved in with spiral grooves and they are able to penetrate wood (or other substrate) only if are turned in the clockwise direction. If you try drilling to the left (reverse speed) the bit will not penetrate. Now, pray tell, why does this line of questioning crop up in your mind? I'm curious. In peace, Roy

: Hi Roy,
: Thanks for the reply. I understand the second part of your response easily. The first part needs some chewing on my part. So is the first part more involved with time or space? Bruce

Hi Bruce. It is best no to try separate time and space into two separate things, as both are relative and have a mutual existance because of each other. "Time/Space continum" therefore would be more accurate. The I Ching depicts the various psychologial states of the human mind in the time/space continuum, in a circle that is depicted in one-dimension only on a flat surface. The northern sector of the graphs symbolizes the extreme yin force ( six broken lines) and the southern sector with six solid lines for extreme yang. Between yin and yang are born the remaining 62 hexagrams. The first is Fu (Return) which is symbolized by one bottom yang line with five broken (yin) lines on top. This first hexagram is on the right (northeast) side. The next 31 hexagrams each have solid bottom lines as well and these bottom lines continue to grow until there are six (#32). After the 32nd hexagram, these poles reverse and all bottom lines become broken (on the left side) moving upward in the yin direction. Since physical reality is not one-dimensional (like a chart) but has volume, height, depth, color, weight, movement, etc. the yin/yang picture has to be adjusted. While the ultimate yang was depicted at the extreme southern pole in the ancient charts, we know that on our round, three dimensional planet, moving with time through space, that the equator at the center receives the most radiant energy from the sun, and that both poles are covered in ice. The movement of the earth, and the pressure of the gravitational pull creates a heated iron core nearly 1,000 degrees F. So in effect the yin portion of the circle (globe) is on the outside and the yang on the inside. When we do shiatsu and there is a knoted yang nodule along a meridian we know to apply thumb pressure and make a counterclockwise (yin) direction to loosen it. When there is weakness along a meridian at a specific point we know to apply thumb pressure in a clockwise postion to create a yang, strenghening effect. We are constantly trying to make balance throughout our every move and thought in life. WE sit on the left side of the car when we drive on the right side. When tired we sleep, when hungry we eat, when yang we are attracted to yin, and vice versa. If however you walk around a circle going toward the left it does not mean you will become yin, or if you walk in a circle going to the right will you become yang. Jsut by the act of walking you are energizing and becoming more yang, irregardless. So in this case it doesn't matter the direction. I would suggest, however, that as long as you are living that you continue to go forward, and like the inquiring person you are to keep asing questions. I hope this helps, In peace, Roy (now going in circles).
