Hi there all,
I have a weird question for you all. I, like probably everybody in the world, have been thiking about the possibilty of bio terrorism coming to my area. I am somewhat fearful and I would like to know how to protect myself and my son if there is an outbreak of disease. Are there any particular macrobiotic and/or herbal remedies that aid your body in healing from something like anthrax or smallpox??? That increase your chances of survival-if there was an outbreak? This has been a trying time for me-as I am sure everyone else out there. I grew up just ten miles from manhattan and to say the least - my sense of security and stability has been shattered. So, preparing for what I hope will never happen-does make me feel better. Like I am doing something to protect me and my son. Any suggestions or advice would be great! Thanks. God bless and peace to you, Jenny. ![]() |

Hi Jenny. I think many people share your concerns. From my experience and research in the field of macrobiotics and nutrition I feel the best way to protect yourself against any and all forms of "attack" (internal/external) is to live your live according to the Tao -- the middle path that avoids extremes. This is the way of macrobiotics and the majority of its philosophical tenets are based in this ancient way of thought.
With good knowledge of yin/yang you can learn to change disease to health, hate to love, and "fear" to the heart of a warrior. In today's society there is much that is out of our hands, but we can empower ourselves by learning the art of balance through the proper selection and cooking of seasonal, environmental, organic foods in such a way that we increase our immune response and reaction time, as well as rate of wound healing ability. Whole grain brown rice and other grains that are easily storable and most viable of all plant species should comprise between 30 - 50 % of your diet if you are in temperate zone. You may want to purchase a couple of 25 or 50 lb sacks if this makes you feel more secure. Good quality well, spring or distilled water should be used to cook whole grains in. Miso soup with onion, wakame seaweed and shiitake mushrooms is very powerful body cleanser with the ability to extract heavy metals and even Strontium-90 (radioactice fallout) from the body. One macrobiotic story claims that during the bombing of Japan in WW II a whole village that was eating macrobiotics with miso daily in the am did not come down with radiation sickness! Local, organic vegetables (root and greens) help provide all the essential vitamins and minerals the body needs providing they are not over cooked or heavily salted. The immune enhancing legume root called Astragulus is also another powerful immune builder that helps the body more readily detect antigens and pathogens in the body. You need only a few slices of the root to one pot of kukicha or green tea for this to be effective. In absence of this you can use Reishi or Maitake mushroom in tea (fresh, dried or glycerine tincture). Usnea lichen is another botanical that you can keep on hand for defense of both viral and bacterical pathogens. You just need to add a small amount to a pot of tea and steep (don't boil) for 10 minutes. Garlic is another botanical that is antibacterial and antimicrobal. Not all people can take this however as it is too strong on the stomach. The best way to take is to finely chop one clove and place on a spoon and swallow without chewing. This should be followed quickly with one cup of water or tea. Both usnea and garlic together are as effective as pennicilin but do not kill beneficial flora in the digestive and respiratory tract. Use for up to ten days. In regards specifically to Anthrax it is my understanding that this bacterium is highly attracted to bovine-type animals ( 4 legged grazers) so by avoiding animal food of this nature you help increase your abiltiy to repel it. Again my knowledge is rudimentary on this topic but I believe early detection of symptoms makes for very easy recovery by a simple course of anitibiotics. If you feel you have flu-like symptoms, fever, etc, you should check in with your primary care provider becasue if untreated this bacterium can cause death. The media has done a pretty good job of making us aware of all of this, but maybe some of it is a bit overblown. The kidneys/adrenal glands have a lot to do with our fear levels. QUite often when then are weak from too much animal food, salt and simple sugars our fear level increases. Ginger compresses are a helpful external remedy for strengthening this system by helping to melt and discharge the accumulations from the kidneys. Remember that our lives are very fragile and we can do only so much to protect ourselves from the varied negative forces about us but please do not allow fear to prevent you from partaking in the daily ritual of life. Life is part of death and we should be grateful and apprectiative for every second we live on this planet. In the end it is not really how long we live, but the QUALITY of our lives and how much we can love each other. That is whay it is important to teach the way of macrobiotics to all individuals and nations, for by giving to others this balanced way of living we can eventually better control the sickness of the mind/heart that many perceive as "evil" and possibly prevent further acts of hate in the world. Nature is always maing balance whether we are aware of it or not. I hope this helps. In peace, Roy |
