As the forum says, I'm Shiitake Jones. You can read my complete bio here and my latest adventures, right now with my new not quite macro boyfriend Ken, who is sort of Zen. http://www.cybermacro.com/shiitake-1.htm
You are welcome to discuss anything you want here in and out of the world of macrobiotics, but if it is something that is of a more serious nature, one of the other forums here may be the better place for that. |

Re: Dinner dilema
Hi Shiitake!
Thank goodness you are here! I have just been invited to dinner at my boyfriend's parents' house for the first time. He is the love of my life. But what if they serve dairy? or sugar! what do I do? Should l take some rice balls just in case in my handbag. Help! Have you ever been in a situation like this!? your macro gal pal, Macrolove |

Re: Welcome fellow Brown Rice Lovers!
Hi Macrolove,
Your boyfriend definitely sounds like a keeper to me! Please take a look at my newest adventure that I just wrote about, Dinner with the cooks parts 1 and 2. http://www.cybermacro.com/shiitake-1.htm A you can see, I went through exactly the same sort of thing early on in my relationship with Ken. Re: Welcome fellow Brown Rice Lovers!
If I may offer up my 2 cents worth... my husband's family eats a very "English" diet, lots of meat, chicken, sausages, butter, bread, potatoes, desserts - plus my father-in-law does the Atkins diet.
Since we've been together, my husband has been eating more varieties of foods and having fresh salads, grains, veggies and cut back a lot on sausages, meat, etc. I was very honest with my husband's family from the start and told them that I eat a predominately vegetarian diet (I still eat fish so I am not a full-on veggie - hence my interest in Macrobiotics). I didn't explain my reasons in a judgemental way or to make them feel bad about their eating choices, just that "I am". We still enjoy meals together when we get together on occasions and I ususally either bring a vegetable dish to share with everyone or eat the vegetables and grains that my mother-in-law makes. I may splurge with a little dessert that she makes but I'll have half the amount or have some fresh fruit. I think that if you are serious about your special someone, and may even be a part of his family some day, it may be best to be honest from the start, if they are centered people, they should respect you for it. Perhaps let them know in advance so that the cook in the family is prepared, even offer to bring a Macro dish, and that way it won't turn into an akward situation when you're sitting there in front of a thick steak and a tray of mashed potatoes with not a grain or veggie in sight.

Re: Welcome fellow Brown Rice Lovers!
Hey there sexy Shiitake,
I dig what you're saying about it being about the people not just the food - I really do. But doesn't what we eat affect how we behave and how tolerant we are? If our livers are all congested how can we be tolerant and kind? Love your liver and your liver will love you! maybe we can show people by example how our food choices can change us - just by being us and living the true essence of mb you were talking about. Its like we are the invitation then, rather than trying to convert anyone to anything...just by living it and being it. Hope Ken had fun camping and didn't run into any macro food loving grizzly bears. Macro camping is cool! MacroDude1 |
