Re: mucous and morning porridge
Hi Gary,
I never used to get those symptoms when I was younger. I've been macro all my life! (25yrs.) It only happens with creamy grains like oatmeal, rice cream, etc.

It happens to me too, but lately not so much. It's also happened to me while eating soup, especially creamy soup for some reason. I figured it has something to do with the warmth and/or creamy texture. Any ideas anyone?

Re: mucous and morning porridge
There's no dairy in my porridge. Just water, grain, and miso.
It doesn't happen with mochi, noodles, or bread. Too much bread and I can't poop because it is a "tight" food. When I was having a Spring discharge sickness in April, I went sans creamy cereals and had no mucous. I think I'll just go back to soup and pickles for breakfast.

Re: mucous and morning porridge
I find that oats as porridge really doesn't like me much these days. It sits in my stomach - and feels lik a brick! even if I mix in a little bit with other grains. and even with lots of chewing - though that helps a bit. Though if I have oats in the morning I find I am much less hungry the rest of the day. It even happens if I roll or crack the oats myself!
So I tend to have rice or millet or buckwheat either as a drier grain or as a porridge. Which is a pity because it is such a nice grain! Goldilocks Last edited by garymill; 09-11-2005 at 10:57 PM. |

Re: mucous and morning porridge
The Scottish way of making porridge, where it was the staple grain, was to add 4 to 5 parts of water to the oats and cook it for hours, stirring it regularly. Oats will absorb an awful lot of water and if you don't add it when cooking then it has to come from somewhere and this is why it can dry out your digestion.

Bita:
Through reading the Kuchi book "Path to Healing", I learned that wheat and oats can cause mucky mucous in ways that dairy can to some people. The book suggested (which is what i'm doing myself actually) is to stop eating wheat and rolled/steel cut oats for a few months and then slowly add them in small portions to gauge your reaction. I find that my morning porridge mucous feeling has stopped after about a week. Not all grains are great for everyone, I personally find that too much wheat makes me feel very contracted and bound, maybe it's more yang than my dear friend brown rice. I hope this is helpful, good luck! |
