Autism

Has anyone heard of autism being treated through macrobiotics with any degree of success? I ask this because my grandmother used to be a nanny for an autistic boy, and she said he was a picky eater but had a voracious appetite for her parsnip soup. Parsnips being a yang vegetable and all, I thought this was interesting because autism is such an extremely yin condition.

This is my first time on this site, and my main objective is to find information on the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder, as we have 2 sons, aged 6 1/2 and 3 years of age, who both test within the diagnostic range for ASD. They are both doing much better since we have removed some food items from their diets, but we believe that if we treat them in a holistic fashion that they will have the opportunity to be completely healed.
I find the information about parsnips quite interesting, as our boys really enjoy them also. If you find any information, please let me know. Thank you lh2ovick@hotmail.com

That is interesting that your kids also like parsnips! I think nothing but good would come from a gently "yangizing" (contracting) macrobiotic diet. I am surprised that there are no studies or even anecdotes on such a thing. Perhaps there are, but we don't know where to look? Please keep us up to date on your experiences and progress. Good luck to you and your boys, and welcome to Cyber Macro.

Re: Autism

Hi, I have been reading the posts here and this is my first time replying. i have a son who is 3 yrs old. He was diagnosed with low spectrum autism about four months ago. We are in the care of a DAN (defeat autism now)doctor for treatment. It took a while to figure out what we were dealing with beacuse our regular pediatrician didnt acknowledge the signs of autism at all. we are very hopeful all of our research and persistance will pay off. We have to give lots of vitamins and minerals 3 x a day along with probiotics and digestive aids. Lots of stuff to get down a 3 yr old. We will start chelation in a couple of months if all the re tests come back good.
I would be very grateful to talk with anyone going through a similar process.

Noelle

I would be interested to hear how the chelation is going, and was wondering what method you are using. I have heard negative things about DMPS, so I hope to God you child is not being given that.

My child is not autistic, but was behaving badly (pugnacious, impossible to live with, etc.) and Algin sure worked miracles on him.

Re: Autism

My son has some autistic/ADD tendencies and we have found that having him on the Feingold diet (feingold.org) has helped quite a bit. He has also been getting some regular chiropractic adjustments which have seemed to help with his ability to focus.

Traditional parenting techniques weren't very effective (time-outs etc) with him either, so we now use positive disipline techniques. Great books were 'Redirecting Children's behaviors' by Kathryn Kvols and 'Easy to love, difficult to discipline' by Becky Bailey.

I hope some of these help.
Thanks,
Leenie
