Need Help- Acoustic Neuroma

Hello. I would greatly appreciate any advice. You see my mother was diagnosed with Acoustic Neuroma 2 yrs ago. As of today the tumor has not grown. She is very frightened of any kind of surgery and has tried to treat herself by eating healty. She is interested in trying the marobiotic diet and I am trying to obtain information for her.

My questions are the following: 1) What books would you recommend reading? 2) What kind of symptoms do you have when you change your diet so radically? 3)Does anyone know of a support group in Miami, FL.? 4) Is it possible to do this on your own or do you have to have some kind of consultation? 5) Is there anyone out there that has Acoustic Neuroma and has tried this diet?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Evelyn

Type 2 Neurofibromatosis

If the tumors have not grown at all in two years then this is a good sign and there is no need to make drastic or rapid changes in the diet. Auditory nerve tumors are usually benign and originate in the Schwann cells which wrap around a nerve. These tumors are due to excessive yin intake over a long period and usually are passed on genetically, so you and other siblings need to be checked periodiocally as well.

I personally don't know any people that have this rare condition of the nervous system but suggest that your mother begins to read more about macrobiotic balancing diet/lifestyle and slowly begin incorporating whole organic foods into her daily food regimine as she starts to remove those foods that are contributing to the growths, such as fats and mucous forming dairy, processed foods with dyes and preservatives, chemical and synthentic drugs and sweetners, honey, tropical foods, alcohol, vinegar, cold foods (like ice pops and ice cream, and canned sodas).

There are a number of good introductory macrobiotic books such as The Book of Macrobiotics by Michio Kushi, The Macrobiotic Way
(also by Kushi) Macrobiotic Cooking for Everyone by Ed and Wendy Esko, and Basic Macrobiotic Cooking by Julia Ferre. You can probably get these at Amazon.com or contact the George Ohsawa Macrobiotic Foundation at 800-232-2372.

I personally do not believe or endorse macrobiotic counselors as I believe it is a system that causes dependency. You and your mother will have to carve a healing path for yourselves and work closely with the doctors that have diagnosed this condition to see what changes occur over time. These soft, fatty tumors should reduce in size over time. There is currently no medical treatment for them except for radiaton and individual surgery when/if they start to interfere with perception (dizziness) hearing loss, etc.

Others here would know better than myself about the macrobiotic centers in Florida. There are a number of listings in the One Peaceful World Macrrobiotic Health& Travel Directory that is published in Beckett Mass. Try calling them at 413-623-2333.

In peace, Roy

Evelyn and Roy,

Presently, One Peaceful World appears to have ceased some of it's operations (the website and the One Peaceful World newsletter have appeared to have quit but one can inquire further through Amberwaves [ http://www.amberwaves.org/ ] ).

Another macrobiotic directory that appears to still be published is the International Macrobiotic Directory
$12.00 ([$10.00 plus $2.00 s&h], (for instance: the year 2002, 42 pp, 5,000+ listings) 1050 40th Street, Oakland, CA 94608. 510-601-1763, fax: 510-652-0298, e-mail: Robert Mattson intermac@earthlink.net .

(names, addresses, and telephone numbers of macrobiotic people, mb restaurants, and mb food suppliers [including food stores] from around the world plus names, addresses, and telephone numbers of natural food stores, restaurants, natural healers, and food co-ops, as well)

In my copy of the 2002 directory there are more than 200 listings for Florida of which more than thirty of them are in the Miami area.

Gary Miller (owner, administrator, and creator of Cybermacro) and I have been working off and on The Online International Macrobiotic Directory ( http://www.macrobioticdirectory.com/ ) and the following is one site that has been found for Southern Florida:

Also, Evelyn, one book that is always quite useful to helping persons learn to heal themselves is the out of print Healing Ourselves by Naboru Muramoto which presently, 7 copies, from between $4.25 and $21.00 can be found at Bookfinder.com ( http://www.bookfinder.com ).

Please... give your mother a belated Happy Mother's Day from us at Cybermacro and wish her well on her road to recovery.

Thank you, very much.
