sources of calcium

Dear Friends:
I have fallen off the macro path for a long time and now wish to return so that I can regain my health. As it has been so long, I cannot recall which foods are the best sources of calcium. As I have been having cramping in my legs on a regular basis, which in the past has been a sign that my calcium intake was way too low, I would like to call upon your combined knowledge to help teach me again what I should be consuming to get calcium.
Thanks in advance for your help. I hope to be a regular contributor.
Dan

I'm recent in Macro, but I think you can find calcium in hiziki seaweed, tofu, sesame, etc.

If you want to increase your calcium level, I think you should review magnesium too.

Hi Dan. The standard macrobiotic diet contains adequate amounts of calcium. Leafy greens, seaweeds, shellfish, almonds,
and wild greens are all abundant sourcs of calcium. Cows
have strong bones and do not drink milk -- they eat grass, no?

Overdosing on calcium actually inhibits the uptake of calcium.
Small amounts are better absorbed. Cutlured and fermented
soy products help in making calcium more bio-available to the
body.

I hope this helps.

In peace, Roy

Dan,

Not to gild the lily, but you might check out Kristina Turner's "The Self-Healing Cookbook" ( http://www.macrobiotics.org/kistorebooks.html, http://gomf.macrobiotic.net/Books_Cook.htm, ).

She talks about (and shows you how to cook) hijiki, wakame, kombu, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, mustard greens, radish greens, turnip greens, and watercress, among other excellent sources of calium and other minerals.

She says "Did you know that the body's calcium reserves get depleted bydrinking soda pop, eating too much protein, and not getting enough exercise. Eat sea veggies to help restore those losses."

Thank you, very much.

Bruce Paine

I am new to macro, but I understand that a very good source of calcium is sesame seeds. I myself, use gomasio (sesame seeds with sea salt) on most everything.
