Grains vs. veggies

Can anyone tell me the emphasis on grains over vegetables? Brown rice tends to burn acidic as opposed to veggies which tend to burn alkaline.

Frankly I like grains better than veggies but a having a hard time understand the emphasis.

Re: Grains vs. veggies

I think the emphasis is on grains because they're the most balanced (yin vs. yang--although they're slightly more yang) food. They contain virtually all the complex carbs, proteins, vitamines, and minerals one needs. Sea vegetables, legumes, and land vegetables can then be added for some variety. I don't know much about acid vs. alkaline yet, but maybe someone can enlighten me.

Peace.

Mary

Re: Grains vs. veggies

Without a proper alkaline balance the body cannot operate properly. acidic conditions lead to all degenerative disease including cancer. These diseases flourish inan environment void of oxygen. alkaline evironments are condusive to oxygen in the body.

It is the interaction of the yin/yang or alkaline/acid that generates the chi/electronic field that fuels the body.

In my opinion that is the great value of this diet. It seems well balanced, grains for a neutral slightly acidic staple and the veggies to balacance it out.

My problem is that ifa person is highly acidic they need a highly alkaline diet. Im wondering if some of the more therapy minded macrobiotic diets are geared that way. If I ermember right diet no#7 is the anticancer diet, I wonded what the protocol forthat is?

Derrick,

Check out David and Cynthia Briscoe's MacroAmerica website and this:

"Acid-Alkaline Health Made Easy

Following are the easy basics for understanding and applying Acid-Alkaline Health principles:

1. In a healthy state, the human blood and the fluid around most of the body's cells are slightly alkaline.

2. Modern lifestyle factors, including diet, add extra acid-forming factors to the blood and fluid around the cells.

3. When the blood has more of an acid load to deal with, the organs that eliminate it, the kidneys and lungs, and the internal system that neutralizes the acid, the blood buffer system, all become overworked. They try their best to eliminate the acid and neutralize it, but their capacity to do this is limited.

4. When acid builds up in the blood and fluid around cells, a healthy alkaline state is difficult to maintain. Over time, acid builds up subtly but surely and weakens all the organs and immune system, causing changes in the internal environment that allows infection, inflammation and other symptoms to arise. A key sign of acid build up is fatigue. People who are always fatigued, usually have acid accumulation in the tissue and joints.

5. Protein, fat/oil, simple sugar and refined carbohydrate are acid-forming. Therefore, foods and drinks concentrated in these will be very acid forming. Of course, we need protein, fat and carbohydrate, but consuming excessive amounts and poor quality foods, brings an acid load to the blood and the fluid around cells.

6. Most of the diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, etc., have their roots in chronic acid presence in the blood, tissue and organs. Immune system disorders, mental illness, and many other health conditions that plague the modern world, have their beginnings in chronic acid build up.

7. The most practical way to maintain healthy alkaline blood and alkaline fluid around the cells is through the selection and preparation of alkaline-forming foods. A macrobiotic diet, wisely and simply done, is an excellent way to maintain an alkaline condition. Contrary to popular opinion, whole grains are not acidifying when properly prepared, chewed, and complimented with foods such as vegetables, condiments, miso soup, pickles, sea vegetables and other alkaline-forming macrobiotic foods.

Learning to apply the acid-alkaline principles to your own health will add a new dimension to a macrobiotic practice.

For detailed information about Acid-Alkaline Health Made Easy, including recipes, home remedies, special baths, and keeping the kidneys and lungs strong, please see the following:

* Acid-Alkaline Health Secrets eWorkshop
* Acid-Alkaline Rebalancing Tips

Watch for David Briscoe's new book, Acid-Alkaline Health Made Easy, coming soon (perhaps in late 2007-BP!)."

Until David's book comes out you will want to read Herman Aihara's Acid & Alkaline which if you can plow through the difficult stuff will show you how acid/alkalinity and yin/yang theory and approach give greater dimension and understanding to the practice of macrobiotics.

Enjoy the adventure!

Thank you, very much.

Bruce thanks for the great post.Ive been studying the alkaline/acid connection in dietand heaalth for sometime. What I was looking for was some specific macrobiotic material, which you have provided!

Thanks again

Yeah agreed, this was the most informative post that I encountered as I was also making a wild search to get to know about this in detail. Actually there was a debate with me with one of my friends who was stating all obnoxious things and I decided him to present the exact details, so this is where I get to find them.

Re: Grains vs. veggies

The pH level, the acid-alkaline measurement of our body, affects every single one of our cells. A constantly imbalanced pH level won’t be tolerated by our system, which may result in obesity (we create fat cells to carry acids away from our vital organs), allergies (the absorption of undigested proteins due to an overly acidic body is a major cause of allergy conditions) and fatigue (an over-acidified body produces toxins and weakens the body’s ability to produces enzymes and hormones).

The key to restoring our body to its ideal pH is to create the proper balance of alkaline and acid forming foods. Since our body's pH level is slightly alkaline, our diet and nutrition should also reflect this. In this regard we should ingest at least 75% of alkalizing foods, like green vegetables or grasses, and never more than 20-25% of neutral and acidifying foods. Eating foods that are alkalizing transforms our body’s balance from dangerously acidic to slightly above neutral.

Fresh vegetables, greens and grasses are an excellent anti-yeast and anti-fungal. Green grasses such as barley or wheat grass are some of the lowest-calorie, lowest-sugar and most nutrient-rich foods on earth, and contain high amounts of fiber. General rule of thump: vegetables for breakfast, vegetables for lunch, and vegetables for dinner.

Regards, Ten

Re: Grains vs. veggies

David Briscoe led a great chat on acid/alkaline here:

http://www.cybermacro.com/macrochat/...&Alkaline.html

and you can also take an e-course on this site from David on acid/alkaline.

It's quite eye-opening. Balance comes from lots of places besides just food.

Probably the hardest lesson to learn about Macrobiotics, but certainly the most fulfilling.
