Sore throat
I'm taking a daily dosage of ECHINACEA right now to remedy my sore throat. Any thoughts or suggestions on that, what else I should be taking, or eating. I would like to know what works for you, and what is best?

Re: Sore throat
Jacob,
I keep having high hopes for echinacea, but if memory serves me right, I don't remember it ever helping. But Lotus Tea definitely did - and it felt so soothing. First time I tried lotus tea I found it very strange, but like many mb things, I got used to it and enjoyed it alot. According to Cornelia and Herman Aihara's Natural Healing from Head to Toe, lotus root is effective for all respiratory problem, especially for cough, including whooping cough...also in reducing a child's fever. (p. 237-8) Also "According to our macrobiotic understanding, sore throat problems are almost always due to eating and drinking too much yin food, especially sugary foods, fruit, and sweet drinks." For sore throats with no other symptoms they have three suggestions: 1) salt plaster used all night (2 cups sea salt to 5-6 Tablespoons room temperature water, put in center of rectangular kitchen towel, roll on longer side, wrap around neck, with clean dry towel over it - leave on overnight) (p. 188), (different for children) 2. gargle with 1/2 to 1 cup hot bancha tea with salt 3 times a day 3. drink 1/2 - 1 cup shitake daikon lotus root tea 3 times a day (4 - 5 dried shitake mushrooms, 2 pieces lotus root, 1/2 inch thick, 2 pieces daikon, 1/2 inch thick, 2 cups of water - bring to boil, simmer 1 hour, soy sauce to taste, drink hot (p. 240) To prevent sore throat, they say to keep throat warm either with turtleneck or scarf (p. 139-140). I've also heard to wear blue around the neck - don't know if that works, but hey, can't hurt. Good luck. Klara |

Re: Sore throat
These are not my thoughts, but Aihara's - to quote again: A sore throat is not a disease but rather a symptom of many disorders from the common cold, influenza, and hay fever to tonsilitis, strep throat, and diphtheria. A sore throat that doesn't go away and/or is accompanied by fever, cough, swelling, or other symptoms should be checked in order to determine the underlying cause." Then they refer the reader to other parts of the book, depending on what the other symptoms are. Hope that's of some help.
There are a couple books out that give remedies for different conditions. That's the only book I have, tho I know there are others. Also many mb books also have different remedies usually towards the end of the book. It's great if you can figure out what was the cause, so as not to create it again (easier said than done). I feel so fortunate because it seems like it's been ages since I've had sore throats, but I know when I don't sleep enough, or when I'm screaming (surprize, surprize) my body will repay my unkindness to it. But with more mb practice, I seem not to need as much sleep, and I can't say I never ever scream at anyone, but gratefully, it does seem to be less and less. Hope you're feeling better soon. Another remembrance from those old days, when my throat was sore, I knew within a couple days I would have a full fledged cold, but again because of mb, the colds seemed to last less and less, that is I got over them sooner. Now I need to be careful and not get full of myself, you know, aha, I eat mb and I don't get that anymore, because that's exactly when it comes :>) Klara |
