Burdock?

Hi there,

I'm an australian macro and in aus we don't seem to have this vegetable known as burdock. Does anyone know if it has another name? What does it look like?

Thanks, Ciara

Ciara

The Latin name for Burdock is ARCTIUM LAPPA.
A search on-line will give volumes of info.

Re: Burdock?

Thanks Mannymoons, have looked it up and yeah, I definitely have never seen this in Australia. Never mind, I guess we just miss out on that particular vegetable.

Thankyou, Ciara

Re: Burdock?

It isn't that easy to find Burdock here in Australia but it is available. The last few winters I even got it fresh.
you can also get it frozen at almost any asian (esp Japanes shop) - ask for gobo root. They also have it dried. I quite like the frozen one - try it with carrots!
You can also get burdock tea from almost any health food shops! even the herba heal or hidle hemmes brand or better southern light herbs etc...

you mentioned dark circles under the eyes somewhere...
that is usually a sign of kidney yin deficiency. And can also relate to iron levels and allergies. The kidney yin thing is most common. that could be why you are craving fruit - yin. Mayebe se a good herbalist. There are experienced mb people in sydney too....

some people do macro councelling by phone etc...

Hi ciara, Ilanit, kaz!

Having had two girlfriends from your side of the planet, I really like Aussie sheilas, and if I had the means I'd be there, happily keeping you all company!

The squeegees and solution applicators that I use in my work come from Sidney, as well!

Thank goodness for the Internet, then!

I can't believe that no one has shown you Burdock, yet, Ciara!

If you buy your gobo from a market, make sure that they are displaying the vegetable properly!

Burdock dries, shrivels up, and becomes limp very quickly, so the roots should either be wrapped up in burlap and kept moist or they should be bundled up in cellophane or plastic.

And the same goes for your storage at home in the refrigerator.

When chopping or slicing burdock before cooking, if you are not going to use it immediately, you might cover with natural or purified water in a bowl until you are ready to use it.

Soon after cutting burdock, you will find that the flesh starts turning a dark colour which means that it is oxidizing, which you don't want!

Asian stores might have farm grown (non-organic) gobo, whereas many natural food stores that have burdock might be organically grown.

Hopefully, you will find this helpful.

Thank you, very much.

Bruce Paine
