Question Cook book with simple recipes

Hi all,

I'm new to macrobiotics and I am finding it really difficult to make time to cook meals. Any suggestions for a cook book with simple, easy-to-make recipes would really help me. I really want to stay committed to macrobiotics but I feel a bit stressed because many of the recipes are so complicated.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated,
Alanna

Hi Alanna,

One of my faves, but now out of print is Mary Estella's Natural Foods Cookbook.

Look for it on half.com or alibris.com

Thanks Bita! I looked it up on amazon.com and it looks great. I just bought a used copy for $1.85! Can't beat that price! I can't wait to get it and start cooking.

alanna, and bita,

Natural Foods Cookbook http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/bibli...2-0870405837-4 is an excellent and stimulating book written by a woman who was simultaneously a student of macrobiotic cooking at the East West Foundation while attending the C.I.A. (Culinary Institue of America) http://www.ciachef.edu/ in the late 1970s (I believe she wrote the cover story of a East West Journal magazine titled "Macrobiotics in the CIA" which sold a lot of copies, I'm sure!).

I met Mary in Los Angeles in 1983 before her book was published, and helped with a couple of her cooking classes 2 years later at the Macrobiotic Center in San Francisco.

Mary was energetic, quick moving, and always to the point, as well as a creative cook of very delicious dishes.

Someone told me that she is now teaching Svaroopa Yoga http://www.masteryoga.org/ , here in Massachusetts.

Another excellent cookbook that has quick and simple recipes is The Quick and Natural Macrobiotic Cookbook http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...627384-6393502 by Aveline Kushi and Wendy Esko.

But the best of the simple macrobiotic cookbooks still has to be The Self-Healing Cookbook: A Macrobiotic Primer for Healing Body, Mind and Moods With Whole Natural Foods by Kristina Turner
http://www.simply-natural.biz/Self-Healing-Cookbook.php

You get tasty and healthy recipes with ordinary macrobiotic ingedients.

Bon Appetit!

Merci, beau coup.

Re: Cook book with simple recipes

I think that Christina Pirello's books are the best for beginners. Either Cooking the whole foods way or cook your way to the life you want. She uses many ingredients that are familiar to every one, which is particualrly helpful if you live in an area that lacks organic food communities, and you feel dismayed seeing that so many macro cook books appear to be written in a new language because the ingredients are so odd. Also helpful if you are cooking for a family or others, who might turn up their noses or complain about less familiar dishes. No cook book has as many recipes as hers, and they are often available on the half.com division of ebay.

Re: Cook book with simple recipes

Here's a website with a lot of simple recipes. I LOVE the baked carrots and sweet potatoes. It's NUMMY!!!!

http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/...cipeindex.html

I'm also a huge fan of Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics. Being a beginner (doing transitional for three months now - 15 lbs lighter!), this book breaks down a lot of stuff for me and makes it simple. A lot of her recipes are basic macrobiotic recipes that you'll find in other books as well, but her explanations and instructions are very clear to me.
