Macro cooking class in NYC
The New Year has forced me to come up with some resolutions. At the top of my list is learning to cook for myself. I am a recent convert to macrobiotics, although I've not managed to rid myself entirely of non-macro eating habits. When I lived in Boston I was a regular at Masao's Kitchen and in my humble opinion, his food is absolutely divine. Now I that I am a full-time grad student in NYC, dining at Souen can chew up my budget relatively quickly.
I would like to know, what is the best / cheapest route to learn to cook the basics, like miso soup, brown rice, etc. Also, do I need to invest in a pressure cooker? Thank you for your time. |

Re: Macro cooking class in NYC
Coconut,
Call Rosemary Serviss at The Natural Gourmet Cooking School in NYC and ask them if they are going to be having any public classes on macrobiotics or if there is a macro chef in NYC that can guide you through some recipes. I just moved from NYC to CA last year so if I'm ever back to visit I'd be happy to help. Here's Rosemary's info: Telephone: 212-645-5170 Fax: 212-989-1493 Address: 48 W. 21st St., 2nd floor, New York, NY 10010 E-mail: info@naturalgourmetschool.com Be well, Ray :o) |

Re: Macro cooking class in NYC
Coconut,
I can say nothing bad about The Natural Gourmet Cookery School 48 West 21st Street http://www.naturalgourmetschool.com/ started by Annmarie Colbin, author of the cookbooks: The Book of Whole Meals, and The Natural Gourmet and the well known non-cookbook Food and Healing and most recently: Food and Our Bones: The Natural Way to Prevent Osteoporosis http://www.naturalgourmetschool.com/store.htm and it's satelite services described by Ray but if you are having trouble affording to eat at Souen 28 E 13th St. and also, 210 6th Ave, Angelica Kitchen 300 E 12th St., or Mana 2444 Broadway, then you might have as much trouble affording the classes provided at this school as they are not cheap: http://www.naturalgourmetschool.com/pubclasslist.htm . Looking around in New York City http://www.macrobiotics.sph.sc.edu/N...actitioner.htm you might find some macrobiotic teachers like Susan Krieger susankriegerki@aol.com , Kezia Snyder (212) 929-2122, or Jane Steinberg macrojane@hotmail.com giving cooking classes. In the meantime, while you are deciding whom to study with, perhaps you could get a couple of the excellent cookbooks besides the ones mentioned above, for instance, the one beginner's book that everyone must have: The Self-Healing Cookbook: A Macrobiotic Primer for Healing Body, Mind and Moods With Whole, Natural Foods by Kristina Turner (Earthtones Press, 1987, 209 pp, ISBN: 0945668104) and every long time macrobiotic's favorite: Aveline Kushi's Complete Guide to Macrobiotic Cooking by Aveline Kushi with Alex Jack (Warner Books, 1985, 414 pp, ISBN: 0446386340) You can buy all the books mentioned at the cookery school and maybe have a bite next door at BACHUE 36 W. 21st Street. Once you have had some experience cooking macrobiotically, you might then want to meet others who have been doing the same at a monthly potluck organized by Kezia Snyder in uptown Manhattan at The Riverside Church of New York http://www.theriversidechurchny.org/ . Call the hotline 212-760-5938 for the next potluck announcement and instructions how to get to it. You can also meet and eat with Kezia and others at NYC Earthsave events http://nyc.earthsave.org/011002/nancy3.htm . Please enjoy the adventure. Thank you, very much. Bruce Paine |

Re: Macro cooking class in NYC
Hi Coconut,
As you may have seen already, there is a macro cooking class coming up in March at the Natural Gourmet Cookery School. Local macro chef Bita Hunt (www.integrativenutrition.com/graduates/bakedbybita.asp) is teaching the course and the menu looks wonderful! It is however an intermediate course so if you're really lost in the kitchen it's probably not a good place to start. I'd also invite you to check out the NYC Macrobiotic Meetup Group (http://macrobiotic.meetup.com/6/). If you aren't familiar with Meetup, it's a forum to bring together locals with similar interests. We have a lot of newcomers in the group who'd like to learn more about macrobiotic cooking. Perhaps we can talk to Bita about arranging a beginning cooking course for us! She's based in Long Island, but she comes into the city regularly. We'd love to see you at our next event. Even if you can't swing the price of classes now (Bruce is right...they can be pricey) you should join us for tea or dinner sometime. I love to cook and am always ready to swap recipes and tips! (Speaking of which, I'd say that it's worth having a pressure cooker. It is a real timesaver and has saved me from takeout on many occasions!) Best wishes, Noele Last edited by garymill; 01-12-2007 at 08:49 AM. |

Re: Macro cooking class in NYC
Noele,
Thanks so much for mentioning my upcoming class and my website. If we coud get enough people together, a basic macro class could be very beneficial. A macro dessert class could be fun as well. Bita
