Eating Macro Aboard Cruise Ships

i will have the good fortune to travel on a weeklong cruise this winter, but i'm concerned about getting enough good quality food aboard ship, especially since i already tend toward underweight. we will be with a large group of SAD eaters. any tips on what to bring (cabin space is minimal) and anyone with experience cruising in terms of what you can realistically expect from the kitchen staff? thanks.
with love and blessings to all, shelah

Re: traveling

shelah,

Is that cruise already paid for?

Maybe you can sell it and get a better one, perhaps a macrobiotic one:

www.atasteofhealth.org .

Otherwise, you will have to be very creative.

Ilanit Tof in Australia has an interesting page devoted toward eating macrobiotic while traveling: http://www.littletree.com.au/travel.htm.

Look around in the forums and the archives and you will find more written on the subject.

Good luck.

Thank you, very much.

Traveling with Miso

Miso will always serve you well while abroad as it will aid in digestion and supply you with a defense mechanism against commercialised food (depending on how much your intake is, of course.)

Happy travels!

Ray

Hi Shelah,
Cruises can be really difficult, as there are many "activities" centered around food. Most of it is conventional and many cruise ships have a very late dinner and then a midnight buffet spread of sorts each night.
The only thing I can suggest here, if you can't get on the wholistic cruise with the macro folks that Bruce suggested , is to bring as much food as you can and have the strength to pass up all of the "extras."
My suggestions for good macro snacks and travel foods would be:
rice balls, macro sushi -- they may have a sushi bar either in one of the restaurants on board or at one of the buffets. Bring your own gomashio, nori, ume plums, kuzu, maybe a portable cookstove with butane and a pot to stow away in your cabin. However, it will most likely NOT be high quality macro food nor will it be organic.
You will probably be able to order fish if you eat it. You may be able to get them to steam or boil some greens or vegetables. Keep away from the butter, potatoes, cream sauces, chocolate buffets, and desserts.
Hope this helps.
Annie
