noob

Hi there!

New to the whole macrobiotic thing (2wks) and was wondering if there's a book or two that can be recommended. I'd like a cookbook or two and a basic principles type book. I figure a forum such as this would be a good place to ask to weed out the good ones from the fluff.

Re: noob

fluff?????? hmmm, never thought any of my books were fluff.

Have you been here? Books - Macrobiotic Books

What I would say is some books are "wider" than others, those I wouldn't recommend for a beginner, not because they're not good, but because they could get confusing at the beginning. Otoh, someone else might say that's exactly what a beginner needs so they don't think mb is an extreme way of life, so the books are good for transitioning.

If I picked just one it would defintely be Jessica Porter's Hip Chick Guide to Macrobiotics, because it's funny and so real, not pie in the sky stuff.

Re: noob

Not "fluff" exactly but with all those choices on that page, I couldn't afford all of them. Just looking for something appropriate for my "level".

Re: noob

another point is that alot of these writers also have web sites so you can get a feel for their work. Jessica Porter definitely does - THE HIP CHICKS GUIDE TO MACROBIOTICS - Jessica Porter Bio

and you can probably also google any of the other authors to see if you "connect" to their work.

Someone also once suggested going to your local library and requesting mb books there (and ask if they can order them if they don't have - would be good for the whole community!!!), or do a search for used books.

I've built up my library over the years and love dearly all my books - hard to tell someone else what would work for them. But for me Jessica definitely stands out from all the rest, maybe because she's so down to earth!!!

btw, besides googling the authors and finding much written by them on the net, you can also find some good information here on the old chats, some led by mb authors.

hmmm, 95% are all fooling me - that's depressing.

Re: noob

To the topic of macrobiotic writers having their website.. it's interesting there are nearly no informations for the main promoter - Michio. What seems to be his official website - Michio Kushi - shares very few informations and the news are very old, not updated.
It would be great to know about his latest schedule, planned seminars, his latest thoughts, ideas, about his health state.
Maybe there's another website covering some of these topics?

I have also spotted the review with Michio in the last Macrobiotics Today Magazine. I have never read any issue. Has anyone read this review and is there any info about his cancer?
Anyone buying this magazine regularly and could tell if there are good informations for him?

Thank you

Don't be depressed! It's a basic of the universe. The little black dot in the white field and the little white dot in the black field of the yin/yang symbol represents that thought.

Re: noob

and your quote, furrbrain, on people like slinkies - how does that fit into yin/yang thought???? or maybe it fits a different philosophy I've yet to discover.

I don't know about the philosophy, I just thought it was funny!

Re: noob

I think the Hip Chick's Guide is great, but I also recommend Changing Seasons by Aveline Kushi and Wendy Esko. It is a straight up cook book and I've seen it sold in many mainstream bookstores, borders, barnes and noble and the like. I also think a great one is [u]The Macrobiotic Way[u] by Michio Kushi, it is a great overview of the diet and also the philosophy, so it is understandable but not overly in-depth for the novice. Hope this helps!

Cool Re: noob

Mike,

If I knew which books you or anyone owned it might be easier to talk about the content of the books and which ones we like best!

Check out and vote in my poll, Read macrobiotic books or magazines? and then I'll recommend some macrobiotic books (I with 34 years experience)!

Thank you, very much.
