Macrobiotics and Birthday Cake?

Hi, my name is Lauren. I've recently started a macrobiotic diet, and I love it! However, my birthday is coming up in a few weeks, and my mom always makes me a homemade cake or gets a Dairy Queen ice cream cake. I know dairy is a "no no" and I want to stick with my macrobiotic diet. So, does anyone know of any macrobiotic cake or pie recipes that taste good (so not only will I, but my family will like it, too)? Are there maybe yummy macrobiotic versions of apple or pumpkin pies? Thanks for your help!

~Lauren

Hi Lauren! I guess your birthday probably passed already. I hope it went well! Sorry I didn't get to you earlier. I am the former queen of sugar and have a ton of macrobiotic sweet tooth recipes that I have been collecting - such as carrot cake, lemon cake, lemon pie, pecan pie, marbled brownies, strawberry shortcake, amasake cupcakes, etc. I would be happy to send any of these recipes to you or anyone else who is interested.

Hello, I too have just embarked on the Macrobiotic way of life and after just one month, I feel terrific. I haven't missed sweet foods very much as my passion is nuts, but I do bake a lot of cakes and entertain quite a bit, so I need to find some good alternatives. I made up a recipe this morning just putting Amasake and veg oil in with dates and hazlenuts and that was nice, but I'd love a good carrot cake recipe and any other deserts if you don't mind forwarding them to me. I'd also be interested to hear how you got started on Macrobiotics and any tips you have for good healthy varied eating. I'm like a sponge for knowledge at the moment. Thank you in advance. Gel UK.

Gel,

Scanning, copying and forwarding recipes take a lot of time and work!

I would rather introduce you to books with the recipes and you can either buy them or get them through your local library.

Check out Chef Sato's All-Natural Desserts: Delicious Cakes, Pies, Pastries, and Other Irresistible Sweets which has carrot cake, carrot muffins and more (click on the Look Inside feature to see the Table of Contents and Index, both of which contain many delicious macrobiotic recipes!)!

Watch Chef Sato bake a strawberry cake at the recent Kushi Institute "The Power of Healing" Summer Conference in Wellesley Massachusetts:

Chef Sato Teaches Macrobiotics at The Power of Natural Healing Summer Conference

Saturo Saturo, besides being being pastry chef at Bizen Kaiseki in Great Barrington, Massachusetts is also Sensei 5th dan of akido at Shobu Aikido of the Berkshires.

There are many other macrobiotic cook and dessert cooking books out there and I have only a few of them.

Thank you, very much.
