Lately I have been on a steady path towards leading a more natural and healthy lifestyle. I read "A Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics" and in it the woman spoke of embarking on a 3 day brown rice fast and ever since then I been interested in starting one. I'm already a vegetarian of 2 1/2 years, and I have completed fasts and partial fasts before, just never one exclusivly of whole grains. I'm not a big brown rice eater, but am very aware that I need to eat brown rice and more whole grains in general. I know I've read about whole grains especially brown rice digesting differently then maybe white rice (which is what I mostly eat) and your system needing time to adjust to it, so would I need to ease myself into eating brown rice first, or would it be fine for me to just jump right in and begin a brown rice fast?
Also I was wondering what else some of you included in your brown rice fasts? Do you only eat plain brown rice and drink tea? Or do you include vegetable juices and water? Do you cook the brown rice in water, or do you use vegetable broth like I tend to to use when cooking white rice? As you can see I have quite a bit of questions and any answers would be extreamly helpful. I've tried searching the internet for information, but there is a large lack of detailed information on the subject. Thanks for all the help! Phoenix |

Re: Brown Rice Fast
Phoenix,
You might recall when Jessica talks about her rice diet experience, it was quite overwhelming for her - I also tried to do a search for you as we've had many discussions on this topic here on the forum, but I wasn't that successful - when I put the words into the search engine, quite a few threads came up. But some of them were clearly referring to the brown rice diet, you may try doing the search here on the forum. But to repeat what I've said so many times, macrobiotics is about reaching balance in a gentle way - we're not into shocking the body into health (exception maybe if someone seriously ill). So reread Jessica's book and see how she explains the basics and just start slow and easy - and enjoy. You've got your whole life ahead of you to enjoy this adventure. Klara |

Re: Brown Rice Fast
Thanks a lot Klara for your response. And you absolutely right, I don't want to shock my system into health. I think more than anything I like the since of freshness a fast gives you, and want to know the best way to go about doing a rice fast. I will definetly take a look at the site you posted though.
