I think the Hip Chick's Guide is great, but I also recommend Changing Seasons by Aveline Kushi and Wendy Esko. It is a straight up cook book and I've seen it sold in many mainstream bookstores, borders, barnes and noble and the like. I also think a great one is [u]The Macrobiotic Way[u] by Michio Kushi, it is a great overview of the diet and also the philosophy, so it is understandable but not overly in-depth for the novice.
