I also visited recently and was greatly disappointed in what I couldn't find in health food stores. The shop on this site has many many wonderful products - take advantage now that you're in the States (they don't ship outside of the States :<( )
But if you ever go touring around the area, go up north towards Mendocino - I believe there there still exists someone who collects and sells seaweed - I used to have the name and I know there was a site - maybe with research you can find it. Anyway, it's a beautiful place to go visit.
