i feel sorry that you solved this by med; yet don't leave med without consulting docs.
i experienced this myself and it was exactly the way you described and i know other people who experienced this also and some of them are friends
for me, i am awake and i can hear everything around me, only i can't move my body and i feel scared and hardly can breath and sometimes i can see and know if its day or night and sometimes i scream but i don't know if really someone heard me or not, because no one come to help, but the solution for me and for my friends and others was to recite:
(Allah! There is no deity save Him, the Alive, the Eternal. Neither slumber nor sleep overtaketh Him. Unto Him belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that intercedeth with Him save by His leave? He knoweth that which is in front of them and that which is behind them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge save what He will. His throne includeth the heavens and the earth, and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime, the Tremendous.) until it leave me, remember this and whenever that thing come again, keep saying it and it will definitely will leave you, trying it wont hurt, its better than staying in mental meds for long time, and i can see that you reply a post here saying it works for you, because it worked with every one i told,
whenever they used to disturb me , i was reciting this verses and it left me in a minute and after few times they never come again and its now more than 10 years, that verse is a holy middle eastrean wisdem to kick awy demons
