My son has some autistic/ADD tendencies and we have found that having him on the Feingold diet (feingold.org) has helped quite a bit. He has also been getting some regular chiropractic adjustments which have seemed to help with his ability to focus.
Traditional parenting techniques weren't very effective (time-outs etc) with him either, so we now use positive disipline techniques. Great books were 'Redirecting Children's behaviors' by Kathryn Kvols and 'Easy to love, difficult to discipline' by Becky Bailey.
