Macro cooking class in NYC

The New Year has forced me to come up with some resolutions. At the top of my list is learning to cook for myself. I am a recent convert to macrobiotics, although I've not managed to rid myself entirely of non-macro eating habits. When I lived in Boston I was a regular at Masao's Kitchen and in my humble opinion, his food is absolutely divine. Now I that I am a full-time grad student in NYC, dining at Souen can chew up my budget relatively quickly.

I would like to know, what is the best / cheapest route to learn to cook the basics, like miso soup, brown rice, etc. Also, do I need to invest in a pressure cooker?

Thank you for your time.
