by Michael Bauce Please visit Michael's Web Site As
we strive to better
understand ourselves,
our lives, our health,
etc..., we are constantly
bombarded with promises
of leaders who will
save us, products (macrobiotic
included) that will
heal us, courses which
will put us back on
track and presumably
transform our very nature
and thought processes.
We talk of miracle drugs,
supplemental nutrition,
healing foods, charasmatic
political leaders, therapists,
healers, scientists,
get-rich quick schemes
and the like. The underlying
assumption is that there
is a magic pill out
there somewhere, and
if we're lucky enough
to find it, we can solve
our personal problems.
The sad reality is that
none of these things,
be it drugs, food, healers,
nor leaders will ultimately
save us from anything.
There is no magic pill;
not shiitake mushrooms,
chemotherapy, vitamin
supplements, Gray Davis,
Michio Kushi, nor the
Pope. At best, these
people and things may
aid in understanding
our personal journey,
at worst, they may be
totally destructive
to it. What works for
the Pope, may not work
for you; we are all
different people. Yet,
we are continually told,
by each of these various
methodologies, that
we are all the same.
We are not. I suggest
that through daily self-reflection,
we can learn more about
our individual transformations
and processes than we
can from any prescribed
notions. The "magic"
of Macrobiotics is not
the diet, but rather
the return to our roots,
the slow transformation
that nature has taught
us as we rearrange our
lives, staying home
to cook three meals
a day. It is in this
way, that we peel back
the layers to discover
the love that shines
within (the only true
healer).
