Hand Acupuncture by Bo Enborg

In Korea Tae Woo Yoo discovered that there is a correlation between the outer part of the middle finger and the head. He researched this and found micro meridians that worked as mirror images of the body’s meridian system. He called his system of treatment Koryo Hand Therapy, KHT.

Later on another Korean, named Park Jae Woo did similar research but found that the five protruding parts of the hand and feet were similar to the five protruding parts of the body and correlating points for the head found on the thumb and the big toe. When Park was doing his research his wife learned about the work of Tae Woo Yoo. Park tried also this system and found that it was just as effective! He wrote to Tae Woo Yoo to convince him to incorporate his findings in KHT and to include the feet. Park didn't get any reply so he set out to develop his own method and called it Su Jok.

Su means hand and Jok means foot. The theory behind Su Jok was published for the first time in 1987. Originally Su Jok was only concerned with ways to activate the therapeutic effect on the body by hand and foot correspondences. Later on, Park Jae Woo succeeded in working out a well-balanced system of metaphysical knowledge with similar mirror images of the meridians as in KHT although their locations are different. In Su Jok, the reflection of the meridians are called “byol meridians”. Byol means “special”.

In 1989 Park Jae Woo founded the Korean Su Jok Academy, then in 1993 he expanded his academy into Russia where he found a very fruitful cooperation with a group of Russian medical doctors. In Moscow he founded International Su Jok Academy. In Russia and some of the neighboring countries Park and his students were able to demonstrate the effectiveness of Su Jok and this helped to raise the procedure to an official medical status which is now recognized in many of the former Soviet republics.

Park Jae Woo got the title of Consulting Professor of the Institute for Doctors Advanced Training in the republic of Kazakhstan. Later he also became Visiting Professor to the Somaya Medical College and Zoroastrian College of India.Today Su Jok is very well known in Russia, Eastern Europe and India. It is also gaining an increasing popularity in Western Europe, Mexico, Libya and other countries

Differences between KHT and Su Jok:

There are several differences between the two methods. KHT is based on the law of the Five Elements (Wu Xing), but Su Jok was expanded fiirst to Six Elements (I will write an article about the sixth element later), and then to the theory of Eight Origins. These expansion of the traditional theories proved to be very useful both as a diagnostic tool and in treatment. Another difference is that in KHT traditional Chinese pulse diagnosis is central, but in Su Jok it is just one out of several diagnostic methods.

In both methods the correspondence systems are essential, but in Su Jok there are several correspondence systems being used, not only on hands and feet but also on the scalp, ears and other parts of the body (most on body’s periphery). These ideas seem to correlate more with the archaic system of acupuncture loci developed in ancient China.

Park Jae Woo also included the Indian Chakra system into Su Jok and the integration of both systems were refined and developed in such a way that they are able to successfully complement each other.

Needles and Other Tools:

There are various ways to stimulate points and areas of the body using both needles and moxa, as well as seeds, light, magnets and pressure. There is an entire book on Su Jok seed therapy -- a very interesting and useful way of treatment when applied to specific loci on the selected meridians.

My own Story:

I started doing shiatsu in the early eighties and since I am a curious person I have looked in to several other healing methods during the years. When I went to South Korea 1993, I learned about Su Jok for the first time. It struck me at once as being a very interesting method. Some years later I started inviting teachers from the Su Jok Academy in Moscow to Stockholm to teach this alternative form of healing.

In my clinic today I use mainly Su Jok and shiatsu and I think they complement each other very nicely. I find shiatsu better for general relaxation, stimulation of the immune defense and problems with the body structures, for instance back pain. Su jok is more effective when I know the problem very precise, like specific organs or parts of organs. It is also effective on systemtic problems like eczema, diabetes, mental problems and malabsorption.

Now I am teaching introductory courses in Su Jok, since the basic principles are so easy it doesn't take long before you can use it on yourself for minor problems. But to learn to make use of all the possibilities of Su Jok, takes years of training.

Editor’s Note: Dr. Enborg also practices macrobiotics and is the director of the Macrobiotic Association in Stockholm, Sweden. If you are interested in learning more about Su Jok therapy please feel free to contact Bo at the following email address:

all the articles relating to su-jok were interesting and comprehensive. but there is not a single site which would show with pictures the points on the hand and feet. i would like to see the points corresponding to the organs of the body to effect cure. is there a cure for diabetes in this system of care??

looking forward to your reply.
