As 2001 began, the U.S. government approved two varieties of genetically engineered (GE) rice, the biotech industry announced the mapping of the rice genome, and Monsanto began the first field trials of GE wheat. No comprehensive studies have been done on the effects of GE grains on human health or the environment. GE foods are not required to be labeled, and consumers have no way of making an informed choice. Some GE rice and wheat may contain Bt, the pesticide that harms Monarch butterflies. The biotech industry plans to convert half the nation's rice to new GE varieties in the next several years. In California, where 80% of the nation's brown rice is cultivated, a recent environmental report warned that the introduction of GE crops could result in "the potential collapse of its organic food industry." To preserve natural and organic foods please sign the petition, which will be sent to policy makers, food manufacturers, farm groups, and health and environmental organizations. SAVE ORGANIC RICE PETITION: "I oppose genetically engineered (GE) rice and support efforts, including mandatory labeling of all GE foods, to preserve natural rice, wheat, and other essential foods for my children, grandchildren, and all future generations. Through my food choices, I will strive to keep America and the planet beautiful, healthy, and peaceful."
