Roy Collin's Macrobiotic Video List Originally Published 2000
In the following list of films we find themes dealing with hope when it is least expected, change when we think our paths have ended, love growing from hate, the beauty of uncomplicated living, the power that food has over us, different perspectives of life from other cultures, the pitting of good against evil, and the offering of new ideas when old ones seem useless. Quite often we gain this insight when roles are reversed or when there are obvious contrasts in the way people live and see. I believe in all of the following films one will find a number of psychological elements that will cause the spirit to lift and the mind to expand.

Here are some questions you might want to try to answer while the film is in progress (just for fun):
1) What is the point of view of the director/author? Does this point of view agree or disagree with any of the characters' attitudes or with your own?
2) What is your personal reaction to the film? Parts you liked best/least in the film?
3) Who are the two main characters in the film and how are they alike or different?
4) What is the main character's dilemna and how does he/she overcome it?
5) What is the general social climate and how does it affect the character's judgment?
6) What other people or events are crucial to the success (or demise) of the main character's goal?
7) Does this movie have the similar thematic content as another movie, book or other work of art?
8) Do you find any symbolism, allegorical (religious) references, or familiar archetypes in the film?
9) Are there other elements going on in the film that make additional difficulties for the main character to overcome? If so, please point them out.
10) At exactly what point (if any) does the main character alter his/her course of thinking in order to accomplish his/her goals? If there is not a climatic point of view, is there a resolution of attitude?
11) Is there an awakening to a higher consciousness by the main character? Is this "awakening" something you have ever experienced, or something that needs to be realized today on a global scale?
12) From the "twelve theorems" and "7 principles" of the old text school of macrobiotic learning, how many of these can you readily point to in this film? Please list them.
