Baking Soda Addiction Follow-up by Dorcas Anne Gerace

Back in March we republished Dorca's article A Rising Health Risk which talks about the dangers of consuming baking powder / soda which is found in many so called healthy baked goods, even those using the label of macrobiotic. Though we thought the article would serve as a reminder that these substances should be avoided to the greatest extent possible, it also attracted comments from two people that suffer from in their own words baking soda addiction. This is definitely something that I was unfamiliar with, but after reading the comments, it appears for some to be a legitimate concern. In the same spirit that Dorcas wrote her original article, to get helpful information out to as many people as possible, she has been gracious enough to write additional material here to try to address the concerns of those suffering from Baking Soda addiction. By all means we would like to see anyone else that suffers from this to further post their own comments regarding it.

Comments by Dorcas
When I read the comments on CyberMacro from those suffering from baking soda addiction, one of the few thoughts that has arisen in my mind has to do with PMS to begin with.

With all the PMS stuff we are faced with, over half of it iatrogenic disease(treatments to young girls when first beginning menstruating suffering from ammenorhea and dysmenorhea;, the pill, obesity, mood disorders, abortion, tubals, hysterectomies), many of the women killing their husbands during the time of their PMS, injuring their children, commiting crimes, unaccountable for their actions because they were acting out their illness without any tools to practice to "bust" themselves in the moment it is happening (no awareness, mostly because no one taught them how to), we can only guess what kind of strategies they would perpetrate on themselves and others with the brain/nervous system, mental/emotional pain they carry. They needs lots of mercy and compassion as we set about to build/teach that awareness of the "them" they are not, to the Soul they are so they can be led back to Source while using this body to go back.

There is also the use of alcohol/street and over the counter drugs while pubescent and its resultant brain damage, largely the hythothalamus that has affected the delicate Master Gland Loop.

There is also the use of high fat, the use of free flowing fats, saturated fats with more implications that butter fat, lard and beef tallow, the meats and heavy use of dairy that produce large amounts of estrogen and hormones that are implicated with PMS and the brain.

Follows are some examples I wish to use as ideas for those seeking to explore how issues might build in the tissue that may be useful, or not, in getting wider vision and compassion for searching out ways to get some clarity about health situations s/he might be wondering about:

Sometimes mothers who take lots of vitamin C during their pregnancy deliver babies addicted to it and the children develop scurvy as a result. We have the report of Linus Pauling's bout with prostate cancer. George Ohsawa talked about how we had yet, at the time he wrote about the use of Vitamin C, to know what the ramifications would be.
We have many examples of women delivering crack and cocaine babies.

My husband's mother took large amounts of calcium when she was pregnant and when his teeth came in, he had to have 14 teeth extracted because they overlapped the ones we would know as normal in their placement. The cause, even way back then, was linked to his mother's overuse of calcium supplements.
Perhaps, these folks who are writing about their addictions to baking soda are responding to chemistry in themselves that is linked to their wombtime or other times in their young lives?

For the ones who have sought for and found relief in the use of sodium bicarbonate, I have a concern that goes like this...what is being suppressed may one day surface with a different label or location that can be connected with the direct use of the product or as called also, side effects. Just like the rhesus monkey studies way back in the 60's when the studies of the effects of the use of polyunsaturated oils was doing to cholestrol, which was a robust celebration because it was found them to lower the cholestrol. However, when the studies were taken to the step of autopsying the monkeys, it was found that the plaque was sent into the walls of the arteries setting up pathologies of arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis, and atheromas.

If we look at the 5 Element Chart, we could look at the Spleen/Pancreas/ Stomach, Earth Element and Heart/small intestine organ energies and look at addiction from those standpoints. Addiction is about emotion-backed demands, obsessive/compulsive behaviours where one believes s/he absolutely needs something to be happy; and the trigger is in the same place in the brain as for substances. This can be disempowering without tools to help one take time out to pull away with awareness to see oneself saying and doing behaviours that are not meaningful to one's purpose. They are not "bad", just tragically expressing their need for happiness/relief/comfort from symptoms.

And we can look at the Acid/Alkaline (see Acid/Alkaline, Herman Aihara for a start) and see that the need for relief from the use of some very acidifying items that we seek relief with extreme alkaline ones. The both of which are pathology inducing eventually.

Sodium bicarbonate is not grown on/in the earth. It cannot grow if planted and bear food which feeds us. I am hoping that these folks who are yearning for relief and truth to helping themselves would be willing to do more research about long range possibilitites for their projects, rather than palliative, magic bullet immediate relief that is short term, though used for years, to help avoid complications down the road.

I should like to recommend Dr. Kaare Bursell, whose medical background is veterinary medicine, but now his expertise is devoted to balancing the human organism using macrobiotic principles and wisdom. He can be reached at alchemycalpages.com

Am I being helpful?

Clueless
written by DivineBovine, March 09, 2008
These things you mention, Dorcas, as possible triggers dont really fit. Im sure it must be something. But i cant drink anything but water. Actually, i also have an ice addiction. Most of the time my water intake is pure ice. The only problem i have with that is that i have became very sensitive. I can tell if water is impure very quickly. And by the way, most bottled water tastes 'fake' to me. Leaves a chemical taste in my mouth. I have even become more environmentally sensitive. Most people think im nuts when trying to draw their attention to an odor (I could smell cat and dog in our previous home, but no one else did. Only when our neighbor told us that there used to be animals there did my husband stop calling me crazy).
With canned foods, esp vegs..i can taste the can.
Back to the soda, i dont eat chocolate very often, though i have periodic fits of it like once every few months..then i eat it like crazy, burn out and eat no sweets at all for a while. I can eat absolutely NO strongly colored candies.
I smoke a little and drink every now and again, but i never want it then. Ive eaten it anyway a few time, but had to spit it out. And i only use vinegar externally. My eating habits are over all pretty poor, but have gotten better since our situation has improved.
My preferred diet is a full breakfast (eggs, toast sausage, juice) and for the rest of the day things like bread, cheese, nuts..fruits and vegetables are weak with me. But i love dried apricots and cabbage when i can get my hands on them. In general, we cant afford to eat like i prefer. People say that eating healthy is less expensive...that is a great lie.

From what ive noticed..sometimes i eat it after some foods seem to leave an acid taste in my mouth..other times my mouth simply waters at the thought of it.
Im like others here in that it has to be a certain type. Some types (store brands always)
are way too salty. Arm and Hammer is never foul or coarse to me, though i haver to be careful and keep it air tight. I used to carry some to work with me wrapped in foil. I even add a bit of water to it so that it forms small balls so that my fingers dont mess so much and so i can pick the size of ball that meets my craving at the time. Sometimes its as small as an english pea, other times the amount could fill the inside of a golf ball.
As far as drinks go, i always try to follow a large soda consumption with a good amount of water, but anything else wont do. I simply cant drink anything else since i can taste chemicals and dye...this is most true of grape and orange sodas..and diet drinks.
Another note about water..ive tried those Brita filters for the tap, and cant use them.
I get the impression that the water is not being filtered, but that there is actually something being added to the water..because the taste is not clean to me. Or maybe im tasting whatever is being used to filter it. We had well water once..and i used to do what i normally do now..which is pour a glass and let it sit for a few minutes. At the bottom of the glass would be this kind of fluffy residue. So then id filter it through paper towels twice and then boil it.
I dont know if any of this relates to my soda cravings, but i have had them since i was a child..off and on. The only other notable thing that may possibly contribute is the fact that i have had excessive mucus all my life. Kind of makes intimacy a nervous thing. Its worse in certain environments..so much that its become my 'impurity alarm'. The only good thing about it is that i never get sick. Even in a house of four people vomiting with a stomach virus.
Has anyone else noticed any changes in their allergies/immune system/sensitivity ?
Maybe some of the things ive said are similar to other soda addicts here...
O yeah..ive been anemic most of my life too..and i also suffer from manic depression. Diagnosed at age 14.

This is so amazing. All of this time I thought I was alone. I LOVE baking soda, and like most of you it has to be arm and hammer. the others just won't do. However I have had experiences with arm and hammer where the soda was too fine or something. it didn't have the fluffy texture. Anyway, I haven't told anyone but my kids have watched me eat it and i have told them it was to relieve gas. I have been eating baking soda since I was about 18 i'm 38 now. started with sticking my finger in the box, to spoonfuls to handfuls. now it's like a meal. this can't be normal but i can't help it. I too will make special trips to the store for the baking soda. It just tastes SO DAMN GOOD!!!!!

I BRUSH MY TEETH WITH BS AND TOOTHPASTE AND I CAN'T WAIT TO BRUSH MY TEETH SO I CAN TASTE IT AGAIN. I DID JUST FIND OUT THAT I AM A LITTLE ANEMIC. I'M GONNA LOOK INTO THIS SOME MORE AND START TAKING A MULTIVITAMIN WITH IRON.

baking soda adiction

I noticed my girlfriend having a box of baking soda next to her bed. At first i thought it was just to take away odors or whatever. But then one night she told me to look away while she ate a dollar coin sized amount of baking soda out of her hand. I asked her why, she said it was for stomach aches and to help her digestive system. I thought that was kind of weird and looked up eating baking soda and now i see its some kind of addiction. The box was pretty empty so i asked if she had ate all of it and behold she told me yes. Should i be worried about this? I dont know what kind of effect it has on the body or if it is actually causing more harm than good. She says she's been eating it since she was a child so any help on the negative effects on the body would be very much appreciated.

I'm so relieved to know that so many people are addicted to baking soda like me. I've been addicted for almost 2 years now. I go through about a box a month and can't seem to stop. But it tastes SO GOOD! I can't help it. I just finished taking some before reading this and reading these comments has my mouth watering for more. I always keep a fresh box of it in my room so that no one knows when I use it. I also keep it in a ziploc bag to keep it fresh because I can't eat it if it tastes funny. I used to just chew and spit, but now I've been actually eating it! This can't be good and has to cause some long term damage right? How can I stop this and what are the damages incurred by consuming large amounts of baking soda? Please let me know...I need to stop.

ITS SO GOOD, AND GETS ME SO ARROUSED. I LOVE IT. LIVING WITHOUT BAKING SODA IS LIKE LIVING WITH OUT WATER, AND FRESH BUTTHOLE. I EAT ONLY ABOUT A PACK A DAY, BUT ITS GETTING WORSE, AND I NEED IT AT WORK, HOME, AND EVEN WHEN IM "WALKING THE DOG".
Possible solution
written by Rin, September 22, 2007
If most of you are similar to me, you came to this page to find a way to stop this feeling of addiction and felt comforted in knowing that you are not the only one who shares this socially abnormal addiction. I feel that I have found the solution. All of you are anemic. If you dont think that you are, see a doctor and you will find that you are in fact anemic. The solution to anemia is Iron. What you will want to do is take Iron pills and deepending on your degree of anemia ( I scored 7 when the average I believe is 14 and I think 3 is close to dead-Someone may want to double check the facts on that) They offer over the counter high strength Iron that is sensative on your stomach. You also may need to take more then one a day. The best way for your body to absorb iron is with vitamin C. They have a pill at Whole Foods called Iron Aid, you can try taking that. I have found that I gradually stopped thinking of eating baking soda. The taste is a little different over time which helps the craving. I AM NOT A DOCTOR (if that wasnt obvious) so you should consult with one to confirm some of this info.
Worse Addiction
written by anemic girl, September 20, 2007
I never even thought about baking soda. I can’t believe there are people with a similar addiction as me. Mine is probably worse though. Since I was 18 (im 23 now) I have been addicted to AJAX powder cleaner. I know that its not good for me (duh) but I cant stop. I don’t swallow it but I chew it and spit it out. I have found different ways to eat it. At first I would pour it in my hands, but my hands started getting really dry. So I started eating from a spoon but it got harder to sneak a spoon in the bathroom. Then finally I started putting AJAX in a plastic Ziploc baggie, adding some water to it, and letting it get hard so that it turns to AJAX “crunchies”. I keep the baggie in the medicine cabinet and everytime I go to the bathroom I chew on some and spit it out. When im at work I think about going home just to eat some more. When im stressed , it relaxes me. I have about 3-4 cans in my kitchen cabinet at all times. I have tried to stop but as soon as im stressed or upset, all I think about is AJAX. The addiction has gotten better in time though because when I first started I would chew on a whole can in 2 days. My mouth and tongue would be raw. It would hurt so much. Now I don’t overdo it. I too am highly anemic and have been since age 18. The hardest part of quitting is how cheap the addiction is….I go to the supermarket and buy AJAX for 0.59 cents. I also use it to clean everything (the tub, toilet, pots, pans, dishes, etc) and without it I cant clean or wash dishes. I like to mix it with a liquid cleaner when I clean because I love the smell of it. I really want to stop because I know it’s a gross addiction and I know its harmful to my body but I cant. smilies/cry.gif
I am also addicted
written by Kay Tatum, September 18, 2007
Yeah. It's baking soda addiction is real. I tried telling so many people that I am addicted and they thinks its funny or just weird. But I have strong cravings and have to have the tate in my mouth. When I think about it my mouth gets watery. Sometimes I try to sober up and quit but I seriously have withdrawals. I was told that maybe I'm addicted because baking soda is the main ingredient for crack and whatever makes a person addicted to crack might be just from the baking soda. At first i thought that was crazy but after realizing what a true addiction this is ...I've considered that for an answer... P.S I'm going to eat some right now!!! smilies/grin.gif
ADDICTED TO BAKING POWDER
written by Ms. Hopelessly addicted to Baking Powder, September 05, 2007
Wow.. I cant believe I am even writing this, after seeing so many postings I can't belive I am not alone. I have an addiction, a daily craving for Baking Powder. It has been almost 3-4 years now. I have noticed the adverse reactions to eating this..my stomach often times has a growling sound as if I am hungry (it's embarassing when others hear it). I also have problem with my bowel movements being very loose or a very bad odor (more than normal) for a typcial bowel movement.

I now have my niece who watches me and loves to eat it to. Although she wants it I try to keep her from seeing me eat it so that she does not become addicted too. I usually consume about 3 cans of Clabber Girl a month. I keep saying I can beat this, I have even went 3 days w/o eating any of it, but that's the most I have been without it.

I dont like this addicition but I cant help it, I crave it all day long and look forward to coming home from work to eat it. I was so bad at one point I kept a can in my car, at my desk at work and at home. Now I just keep cans at home in my pantry - trying to break this cycle of addicition. This has to be harmful to my body, but what can I do?

As a todler I remember eating Ajax and baby powder. I am now in my 30s and anemic. I had a bad tooth and heard baking soda was good for it. I got addicted after brushing with baking soda about a year ago. I now have 6 different pails of 15 lbs Glabor Girl Baking Soda in my garage. I am so addicted. I chew it til my mouth is raw. This cant be a good thing. I crave it all day and bring a stash to work. There is no way this is healthy. I hope someone helps us before our health suffers, or at least tells us how our health may suffer. Once again, remember I am anemic like several others here. Are you all female as well? This may be a "female" thing since many of us are anemic.

I can't belive that there are so many others like my self. The craving after meals. Hiding boxes around the house prior to moving out of my parents' home... Chewing and spitting it out...I even remember as a kid in elementry school, when the teacher would write on the chalk board how it would make me salavate; longing to chew some of that delicious white powder.
Baking Soda Addicted
written by Boston Bunny, June 24, 2007
I am 52yrs old and have been eating baking soda since I was about 10. It started with sticking my finger into the box kept in our frig, then to spoonfuls from the box, to buying my own box and hiding it in my room. When I moved out it was no longer a problem, I could have all I wanted. I, like may of you chew it and spit it out. Actually, I have some sitting here now. My husband has no idea what is going on, since I use it to clean things in my kitchen and bathroom, as well as in the laundry. This is my way of having large boxes all over the house. I too had a problem with anemia but not very bad, from reading the other comments I guess I was lucky. However my blood pressure is a little higher than it should be but again not bad.

I do not understand this craving but I am glad that I am not alone.

I previously posted on 4/13/07 and have since been on prescription strength iron due to severe anemia. The anemia is due to uterine fibroids. Almost immediately after starting the iron regimen, I went from chewing and spitting out baking soda practically all day long to hardly ever thinking about it anymore. I didn't really believe I suffered from PICA. I am now a true believer. I would encourage most who suffer from this disorder to have your blood levels checked. I feel completely liberated. Good luck all!

For those who have asked for resources, I believe the most immediately useful thing you can do is find a local counselor. I put a link above, and there may be a support group that fits you, but none of them are for pica, so it would be whatever else was going on in your life. Or maybe the owners of that site would help you start a 12-step group for PICA or for baking soda addiction. Good luck! I feel most for the woman who wrote it has been six months and she still has the cravings. The beauty of the 12-step programs is that you learn to live and thrive beyond what you would ever believe when you are caught in your addiction. I am very sorry you have six months free and yet you are not free at all! Keep seeking, you can be healthy and happy, once you find the right tools.

I am so relieved to know that i am not the only person who CRAVES baking soda. I have to have it after i brush my teeth in the morning (or else my mouth doesnt feel as clean, i scrap the baking soda across my teeth wiht my tongue) and usually a couple of times at night. i too make special trips to the store just for baking soda. i can only eat Arm and Hammer brand, no other brand tastes the same. i dont know why i am addicted i just love the taste and also the texture. i am so embarrassed of this addiction and also wonder what it is doing to my body. i asked my doctor a couple of years ago what the affects of eating baking soda were and he didnt know. i too have anemia and know that it might be caused by baking soda...i honestly though dont want to stop eating it, i dont think that i can.

Does anyone else notice how the quality even varies from box to box? I have a full 4lb. box that I am throwing away because the taste is too perfumed. Some textures vary even. I am very particular about the flavor and texture that I need, and will drive back to the store to get just the right box. I have opened a box before I left the store parking lot, chewed it and spit it out in the lot. It really is disgusting, but I, too, love baking soda.

Baking Soda Leads to Infection

MasalaLady: I've said it before, and I'll say it again. It is time to get yourselves real addictions. I mean really, what do you say to the doctor when he asks you if you have a high sodium intake? "Umm, yes Dr. Peterson, I eat a handful of baking soda every morning with breakfast. Is that a bad idea?" Bum a cig off a bud and get your life back on track. smilies/cool.gif
THANKS CEEJAY
written by MasalaLady, December 17, 2006
I have been "chewing" baking soda for about 2 years or a little less. It started with a bad tooth I had...and I thought baking soda helped keep it cleaned out and fresher until I was able to have it taken out. Well after the tooth came out the cravings subsided a bit and then I started up again. I only chew it I don't (try not to) swallow any.

Ceejay your info about having the kidney infection due to high sodium has helped me a lot. I have had an on going infection (uti) for about 2 month off and on...the only thing that has saved me is my huge preference for water (which i rare for me) and my use of herbs... I couldn't figure out why nothing has knocked it out...now I have a felling I know why. I will curb, my intake of baking soda (hopefully ) reduce it to zip ....I believe in mind over matter. Previously I just had no reason to want to stop because there was no (so I thought) side affect. No I know it is affecting my health ....thanks Ceejay! I've had a kidney infection before and ended up in the hospital for almost 3 whole days...so I was terrified it would happen again...now i have an idea how to stop it from happening....Thanks a million

To "CeeJay",
I do believe that this excess baking soda consumption is starting to affect your brain capacity. You seem to have a number of grammatical errors in your latest comment. One of them being, "rest of his pals around so ignorant." Are we so ignorant, or aren't we? One couldn't tell from this sentence as it doesn't actually contain a verb. Also, you mentioned that, "...dumb comments don't deter real people who really need help from getting much needed help..." If these peope need help from getting much needed help, then it is certain that you do in fact, need help. I am not sure if the baking soda has killed brain cells and you simply can't remember how to speak, or you were just stupid to begin with. I believe it is the latter, as it is you who is addicted to baking soda. I bid you good day. smilies/cool.gif

Normal, and the rest of his pals around so ignorant. This web site is designed to assist people with a real addiction. It is a shame that people like "Normal", "Agrees with Normal", and "Baking Soda Sucks" have to litter this site with their stupidity. If you don't understand the addiction then you need to keep your comments to yourself. You are an idiot. I just hope your dumb comments don't deter real people who really need help from getting much needed help and information. And by the way, I am not a "Freak!" Yo' mama is. smilies/angry.gif
Child Wellfare Will Be Getting A Call
written by Happy and Soda Free, November 30, 2006
I can't believe that one could be so addicted to a substance that can be so useful, but so harmful in the wrong hands. I love baking soda, mainly because of the wonders it brings to delicious baked goods such as cookies and cakes. You on the other hand, like it straight up, and you're willing to throw away your life just to get it. I think that child wellfare should be contacted after you sold your son's bed. The poor child. He would probably be better off being raised by a pack of wolves. At least they can control themselves. And if he gets eaten in the process, at least he wouldn't have to live with the shame of having a parent who is a baking soda junkie. I love white powder, just not the baking soda kind. I used to have a friend who was addicted to baking soda. He was a good person, until the effects of the white stuff grabbed him around the neck and wouldn't let go. He was dragged into a downward spiral of addiction, selling his cat just to make the payment to his dealer, the local LuckyAid supermarket. He is in jail now, homicide charge, and he will be behind bars for probably the rest of his life. He saw a bum on the street with some cocaine and mistook it for baking soda, he jumped him and when the bum refused to give it to him, my friend jumped him and that was all she wrote. He threw his life away just to get his hands on some baking soda, it is a terrible tale of despair. It is time for you people to get help. AddictedInVermont needs to do some serious thinking if they want to give a good life to their poor son. I can only imagine the nightmares he must have at night filled with baking soda and tears. It is time to grow up AddictedInVermont. Get a life and a real addiction.

Hey Normal, you have no clue what its like. This is a very serious addiction for us who have this problem. I am 42 years old and have been addicted for 16 years! Its very hard to cope with, and hard to find the money. I eat almost 2 boxes a day. The addiction is getting to my family and my wallet. I even sold my 6 year old son's bed to get money for baking soda. I just told him it was better for him to sleep on the ground smilies/sad.gif
I dont find how you two think this is funny. This effects our familys and friends.
My addiction started 16 years ago when I was working at a small restaurant. I was a waiter and a fellow waiter played a prank on me and put baking soda on my fried dough at our 4th of July party. I didnt even realize what I ate. When I found out it was a big joke at work. And to rpoove that I didnt care I ate a big spoonful right in front of them. I noticed that wonderful taste and texture right away. It was orgasmic. Ever since then Ive been hooked. Im really glad I found this website, I think we can all help eachother, execpt for the previous 2 people. I would like to overcome this addiction and live a normal life.

Hey Normal, I hope your house burns and your family dies. smilies/smiley.gif

honestly baking soda? i hate normal though for being soo incencitive. but i sorta agree because you need to just get over the fact that baking soda should not be eaten in mass quantitys as i have read above. try something else like video games or something entertaining and more of a use of your time.

It's time for you guys to grow up. Get a real addiction for God's sake. It's about time you guys go get yourself some booger sugar, power flour, the good stuff. Shoot some heroin or something useful at the least, smoke some crack, then you can join a real support group instead of one devoted to baking soda addicts. You are alone in your freakish addictions, find some cocaine, use it, join a support group, at least you'll be a junkie instead of a freak.

I wonder what they must have thought when they found out it was baking soda. smilies/tongue.gif
My baking soda addiction
written by Combs, November 19, 2006
For years I have thought something was wrong with me b/c I eat baking soda & to hear that there are other out ther like me is relieving. I have been eating baking soda since I have been in the 7th grade, I am now 21 and a senior in college & my addiction is stronger than ever. I can remember telling my friends in school about it & they would laugh at me. Then I found myself sneaking in my science teachers room when he wasn't there just to get some of his baking soda. I even had friends bringing me some to school in a plastic baggy. I would find excuses to tell my mom to buy some for the house. Now I keep a box of it in a drawer by my bed. I go through a box a month & just like some of the others, my mouth waters when I think about it. What I enjoy most is the clumps of it. I have also noticed that after I eat enough to get me "satisfied", I usually have excessive gas, and when I eat it after meals my stomach gets really bloated. I really wanna know how I can stop this b/c for years I have wondering what it is doing to my body & I have been ashamed to tell my family and some of my friends (now that I am older). WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!??????
Baking soda cravings
written by CeeJay, November 03, 2006
I've been struggling with an addiction to baking soda for about 3 years. Just like many of you, I too started eating it when I was pregnant with my son. I had severe heart burn so I would mix it with water and drink the solution to ease the pain. Then when the heart burn became so bad I couldn't wait to mix it so I would just eat it and drink the water. The taste was so wonderful. Just thinking about the baking soda made my mouth water. I can say that I notice that I would eat the baking soda whenever I would become stressed. I would rationalize reasons for keeping it in the house such as needing it to brush my teeth and keeping the odors in the refrigerator under control. But my revelation came when I was in the supermarket and I knew I couldn't buy the baking soda because I knew I would eat, so I just poked a whole in the box and ate it in the store. I said to myself I've got to get some help. I felt that this was unhealthy so I did some research. I learned that I have fibroid tumors which are very common in African-American women such as myself. The fibroid tumors cause me to have an extremely heavy menstrual cycle. As a result of that I am anemic and a condition of that was pica. "Pica" simply is a mental or physical condition that causes you to consume non-food substances. Because my body is lacking iron due to the anemia, I eat baking soda as a result. My doctor told me to take iron supplements 3 times a day for 1 month to get my iron levels up and after that I take 1 tablet daily. I did notice some physical side-effects from my baking soda addiction such as; (1) frequent trips to the bathroom due largely to the fact that I developed a kidney infection for the large doses of sodium; (2) I had lower back pains, also a direct result of the kidney infection; (3) my stomach would seem bloated; (4) I had heal spurts; (5) but the number one problem was my blood pressure was very high. I hope this helps someone out there overcome there addiction. Good Luck!

I have been addicted to baking soda since the 7th grade and I am now 26 years old. I like to chew on the substance and then spit it out. I found out that I really enjoy chewing it when I am really stressed out. The chewing makes me so calm. I will eat a medium size box every 2 days if I could have it my way. When I see the orange box that it is in my mouth begins to water. Just hearing the name Arm & Hammer makes me want to go and find it. I am not as addicted as I use to be about 2 years ago but I still have cravings that comes and goes. I can stop but after about 6 months I get instant cravings. I am very glad to be informed of others having this condition. I knew with the huge cravings that I was experiencing I could not be the only one experiencing this type of addiction.

I have the same problem with what I feel is an addiction to baking soda. This is seems the only information on line that openly discusses this disorder. Do you think there is a reason for there not being any information on line about studies on what can be done to overcome this "addiction" I have not had baking soda in over 3 months and I still intensly crave having baking soda. Do you think that there is some kind of "cover up" happening that is preventing information on this matter from getting out to the public. I am just saying smilies/smiley.gif

I\'m so happy that i ran across this site. I\'ve been eating baking soda for 6-7 years now. My freshman year of college was 4 years ago and i would eat a box of baking soda in a month. I moved back home and told my mom she just told me to stop, but then i would wake up early in the morning and eat about 3-4 tbs. She soon realized i was actually eating it. There\'ve been months were I wouldn\'t eat since i would have eaten the whole box and my mom and no need to cook and I never wanted to get caught. I would try to contain my self not to go out and by a box. Every time I would think about baking soda my mouth would water. i would try eating baking soda with foods such as chips, pies, beans, spagetti and etc. I even had some tonight, right before i found this site. I know it\'s not a normal thing and I would love to find help for this. My main concern for years has been, is it harmful. I\'ve been looking for infomation for the past year and have never found anything until now. I found out that a condition called \"pica\". My main goal before i graduate, hopefully before classes start is to get myself healthy. I really would like to know any information that you have. Thanks so much for putting up this articles, i don\'t feel alone anymore!
Baking Soda Addiction

I am so glad to find this site as I too am addicted. I keep a box in my car, the house and a travel container in my pocketbook the kind that people use for lotion that you can just squeeze. If I am out in public and get a craving jI ust open the top and squeeze it in the back of my mouth. If someone ask I just tell them it calms my nerves which it does. It just relaxes me I don\'t know why. My mouth waters just talking about it. I don\'t always eat it everyday but when I am stressing I eat it more. I too am anemic. I dont know why I really eat it but I am glad to know that other people have this addiction too.

written by Guest, March 05, 2006
WOW!!! I can\'t believe I found this website!!! I also have an \"addiction\", but it isn\'t as serious as some that I have read...I was telling a friend that when I was pregnant with my first child, I would want to eat Comet cleanser for some reason, but knew I shouldn\'t for obvious reasons. Later that day, after talking about it I went home and noticed the Comet in the cabinet, and for some reason I wanted to taste it again. Well, instead of eating the Comet, I reached for what was next to it, baking soda......after that, I found myself drooling if I went in the bathroom (where it is kept), after brushing my teeth, or just talking about it. My mother also noticed boxes in the trash and got after me about it (I\'m 37!!!) I find myself craving it after brushing my teeth, which is when I would normally pop the handfuls in, swish them around and spit/rinse. I recommend for people trying to break our addiction that you keep NO baking soda in the house, and try to change things/events that you think may trigger the cravings. I stopped buying the baking soda and changed the toothpaste I use, so the craving has diminished, but I\'m realizing I\'m going to have to get rid of my powdered detergent also because it reminds me of the baking soda and makes me think of chewing it again. GOOD LUCK!!!
Baking soda addition may be PICA
written by Guest, February 18, 2006
I have been craving baking soda for quite some time. I like to add water to it and make it hard so I can crunch it but I don\'t swallow it. I chew it and rise my mouth with it. But I was at the point where I had to have some everyday. I would brush my teeth 5 times a day just so I would justify using it. I thought I was the only one. I found out yesterday that I have anemia. By doing research about anema I found that one effect from it is craving non-food items such as baking soda. This is called pica. It is an eating disorder that some people experience if they have iron or zinc deficiencies. I will see if taking iron will make the cravings go away.

OMG! Someone help me! I\'m sixteen years old and so addicted to baking soda that if i don\'t have if I\'d cash in my loose change for an 8oz box. I need help, i\'m too young for this. This is the equivalent of spending money on cigarettes. I should be saving my money for a car but instead i splurge on Arm and Hammer baking soda. i love the taste of it and i can\'t even spend the night at a friend\'s house without bringing a box for myself. am I hurting myself? because I\'m a dancer and can\'t afford much moredamage to my body.

I have been eating baking soda since I was 16, I\'m 26 now. My cravings are so bad for it when I try to quit, that I have to start right back up. I have stopped again now, and have not had baking soda for 41 days. I still want it though, and can\'t go into the grocery store\'s baking aisle. I usually use a straw.

Unbelievable!!! ME TOO
written by Guest, December 28, 2005
I am a 31year otherwise healthy female. I have been diagnosed with slight anemia in the past, but nothing too serious. I am a bit different though as I don\'t \"eat\" the baking soda but I chew it and spit it out in the sink. Rinsing my mouth excessively so not to actually absorb too much. I started this strange habit about 1 year ago. The cravings have gotten so much stronger it is frightening. I started doing this because I had a molar tooth that needed to come out and found that by chewing the baking soda this subduded any foul oders. Since having the tooth removed this summer, I STILL crave this. Previous, when I fist started I would take about a month to chew a 16 oz box. Now I chew that size in less than 3 days, I have since graduated to buy the 4 lb box. Which lasts me almost a month now. I just bought two today. I have had the cravings at all different times. I have made several special trips to the store just for baking soda. My blood pressure is fine, but my lips have become constantly chapped. I had to stop using it for about a week as the roof of my mouth became so raw that it burned. My mother has been fussing at me for \"eating\" baking soda. I have just begun to realize that I been become addicted. Now I know I\'m not the only one.null

I always thought there was something wrong with me because I love eating baking soda. I tried to stop several times but I\'ve never succeeded. My mom has taken boxes from me but I\'ll just go buy new ones. I usually eat alot when I\'m stressed because some how I just FEEL like it makes me feel better and calms me down. I know this can\'t be normal. If anyone knows of the health risks please post them. Thanks.

Im so glad to have found this, that I am not alone in this struggle. I am addicted to baking powder (Clabber). I started to eat it when I was pregnant with my first child, my mother use to eat it only for digestion. That was 13 years ago. I eat about a can a week. I would love to know how to get off of this. I am now trying to wean my self off, with no luck. I sneak off in the middle of the night just to get a can. I eat it after ever meal and every time I am stressed about something. Oh, and the funny part is it has to be fresh, or I can\'t eat it. If it tastes funny, or has been setting for a long time to taste like salt, I wont eat it, I will just go buy another can. Please help me figure out how to stop this.

I have been eating baking soda for 5 yrs. I get these compulsions a few times a day, and I try to control it but it\'s seems impossible. I too can remember sneaking off to buy it. I went to the doctor and was told that I was anemic and that can cause a condition called pica. Pica can cause cravings for dirt, and all sorts of things including baking soda. I eat so much I get a headache and I have had to take a fluid pill, because the sodium made my pressure go up. I find that I have to eat it after a meal as well as a few timed a day. I need help, but it\'s good to know other people can relate. Nobody else I know eats this stuff and they think I\'m crazy, although I\'m sure the baking soda is only a small part of it!

I do have a question though for all who ate it while pregnant, did it have any effects on your baby? If so please let me know

Whooooooa. I can\'t believe this! I can\'t believe that there are other people who share my addiction. This is really unbelievable that I am not the only one! I am currently in \"remission\" and not partaking right now. But my mouth does water just reading these comments. I\'m going to stay \"clean\" because I don\'t like that compulsive feeling. I have found that drinking fruit juices especially citrusy types makes partaking of the baking soda repulsive. There are other things too that I would eat that made the baking soda repulsive. I can\'t think of what they were right now but when I remember I will post because it has worked! I can\'t remember the last time I ate baking soda. Love you guys, hope this helps.

I never knew I was not alone in my Baking Soda addiction. I started eating baking soda when I was about 13. My mom made me stop but I would even sneak away from her in the grocery store to buy my own and hide it in my room. I stopped eating it for a few years but always thought about it when I\'d see anything from arm & hammer. I also salivate when I think about it. I tried to stop but finally compromised with myself by resorting to the \"chew and spit\" method. I love everything about it and my boyfriend even asked me what do I do with all of that baking soda. I never knew there was anyone that could share my feelings about it. Is this really an addiction? Baking Soda Addiction

I\'m so glad I found this page because I didn\'t know anyone else had an addiction like this. I didn\'t even know I was addicted until I went on a weekend vacation and didn\'t have any with me. I found myself craving it and just imagining it...when I came back home and saw the box I was surprised to find my mouth actually watering and I\'ve tried to wean myself off of it. Usually I take a pinch of baking soda and wrap it up with a piece of tissue then digest it all through my mouth. Sometimes I sniff it which I think is probably dangerous. The side effects I have expieranced are frequent bathroom visits and sometimes I feel woozy though I\'m not sure if that\'s because I haven\'t taken it or because I have taken to much of it. Sometimes I get stomach pains. Nobody in my family knows about my addiction and they would probably would think I was crazy if they did.

Dear PJChick:

From the graphic way you describe your experience with the stuff in the orange box, I can only imagine the depth of emotional suffering you have because of the grip it has on your choices and freedom to live free from the stuff...

My heart is touched when I read the words REALLY HARD and empathize with the depth of that pain of your need to find help . Thank you for putting your value about how much it means to get in control of your life on the site...

PJ, I am going to stick my neck out and tell you what I am imagining...I am wondering if your use of the baking soda is about some effect to an unresolved issue and very precious value of yours and it ended up being used as the way to soothe some pain...and because you used it so much to soothe that pain, it was the remedy that ended up being \"addictive\"? ...When you say you started using it when you were pregnant, I am wondering several things...did you have a nutritional imbalance in your body at the time that set you up for the cravings...I am wondering if you might have been sad or mad at being pregnant...I am wondering if while you were pregnant you thought something was wrong with you as a person and you were not a good this or good that? ...

I am wondering if you were angry or resentful from something your husband said or did at the time...or if you carried some hurt into a relationship that got triggered...I am wondering if you began to use the baking soda to fill a space in you you feel you needed to stuff down something precious because you did not have the inner resources to handle it any other way than with the baking soda?

You can see I am throwing out lots of possibilities...I am guessing you read what I posted to those for the dates of 9-3, 9, 20 & 25 and did not particularly find anything that fit your circumstances...is that accurate?

I am wondering if after you have pondered some of the things I said I was wondering about, if you would like to e-me to talk some more? or not...
If you feel more comfortable about posting more on Cybermacro, you would always be welcome and safe to do so...

For now, I will say good bye...and I am hoping that my need to contribute to your well being has been fruitful...Kindest, Dorcas Gerace

Dear Kat,
Thanks for posting yours of l0-30-05 and the graphic way you describe your experience with the stuff in the orange box...I can only imagine the lack of freedom you are enduring as it runs your life as it does...
I am wondering if you might like to know that soda is not a food item, but is a chemical. Using the extremely alkaline stuff like the soda kicks in the energy of the kidneys and they want salt to offset the destructive cycle they have been put in because of the soda and that is why you are reaching for the salt. The kosher salt is from the mines so it is really potent stuff in and of itself...

I am moved to ask you this...I am wondering if this is a symptom due to reacting to something painful to your heartfelt feelings and it has become what seems like an addiction...In other words, might you be using the baking soda as a remedy for some deep hurt/anger...and now the baking soda is an unconscious remedy to cover over the pain of unresolved incident? I am going to stick my neck out right now and ask a hypothetical question...

Sometimes when, and I will use our husbands and I don\'t know why, just decided to use that as an example...say our husbands say or do hurtful things to us, and out of our hurt, anger, resentment, we reach for something to soothe us because we don\'t have the inner resources to know how to handle the situation openly and honestly...I am wondering if you have a relationship issue (maybe with Mother, friend or?) and have turned the problem so inward that we are doing all we can to keep it stuffed, using the baking soda? We could easily strike outward and do things like teach the children to hate their father, or run up the charge cards, or not fix dinner or not keep up the house, wreck the car, get fired, or, or, or...the list can go on forever...
And using the baking soda can also be a way to go outward with the issue...using it so that our husbands will suffer seeing us suffer and feel guilty, with neither of us getting anywhere except chipping away at the love in the relationship...or devastating our body and chipping away at what self esteem we have left...

I am wondering if you knew that soda is not a food might be useful info for you? I am guessing you read what I posted to those for the dates of 9-3, 9, 20 & 25 and did not particularly find anything that fit your circumstances...is that accurate?

So now Kat, I will say good bye for now and invite you to e-me if you would like...or post more on Cybermacro if it meets another need of your to communicate...

For now, Dorcas Gerace

Dear Friend, thanks for posting your heartful concern about your stepson on Cybermacro. I am hoping my need for understanding might touch with yours and with some of the ideas I want to present might be useful to helping support him in his effort to find some relief from his prison he has created for himself very unwittingly...

I am guessing that what I posted under the heading For the Guests of 9-3, 9-9, 9-20, & 9-25 you read when you logged on and did not find anything in it to offer some clues...is that accurate?

I am guessing this young man is a teen? I am guessing that close to his school are fast food places where he can join in with his buddies and visit, laugh, share and eat stuff like fries and burgers with cokes etc?
Here is what I am wondering...if he is stopping off at places as I described, perhaps he has a nutritional deficiency from acidity from eating these kinds of foods...and he is using the extreme alkaline food to offset the acidity...or perhaps he is using some substance that might be causing the acidity? or perhaps he has encountered some hurtful experience that he does not have the inner resources to know how to handle and is using the stuff in the orange box as a way to soothe some very deep pain about a value he holds dear...Perhaps he is blaming himself for something going on between you and his Dad...the guesses can go on and on...

For whatever reason he is using this chemical, he is attempting to meet some very precious need of his. He is scared, I predict...he might be very worried about something and he wants to be in control of his life and feel free, light and happy.. and he does not have the key to the door to his heart.

I can only imagine how scared you are as you watch him scarf the stuff...May I gently suggest that you talk to his Dad and employ his help as the main support, seeing that you are also wanting the best for him...with no shame and no blame...You can remember a time when you were so scared that you acted it out in unskillful ways, I\'ll bet...Kick in that memory and filter down your compassion you were needing then for him now...

I am very moved that you joined us on Cybermaco to post your comments...if you would like to e-me back direct, please feel free to do so...or not...
If you feel more comfortable and safe to post more on the sit, we would like to hear what you discovered as you help your young man find his way...

Baking Soda
written by Guest, October 31, 2005
Ive been eating baking soda since 1997..it started when I was pregnant with my first child. I used it for everything..Id walk around with a box of it, sprinkling it on the carpet, and eating it at the same time.I sometimes add a little water to one box, and shake it a little, and it hardens and makes little balls..I actually refer to them as \"Crumbles\". Other times, I take spoonfulls and put it in my mouth and chew on it, then I brush my teeth as hard as I can, and then spit it out.I probably actually ingest about half a pound a week. Also Ive been eating kosher salt...a little sprinkle in my hand, and pop it in. Sometimes I mix the soda and the salt
