"In a free society, we control our own destiny. After all is said and
done, it's your own decision if you are going to live a long, healthy
life or not. The amounts of money people spend for automobiles,
entertainment devices, etc, are so high that the excuse that "it costs
too much" doesn't hold water. It is our closed minds that are our own
nemesis.
My brother, Dr. Benjamin Whang, works in the U. S. Government designing
nuclear submarines. One summer he spent several months in the Pacific
Islands with a group of neurosurgeons. When he came back, he told me a
story that he heard from a surgeon.
During the French revolution, thousands of people were sentenced to be
beheaded. A group of neurosurgeons conducted a massive experiment with
the victims. The experiment was to try to communicate with a head after
it was severed from its body. The families of the victims were
compensated for their voluntary cooperation with the experiment.
The forms of the questions had to be answerable with a Yes or a No. For
Yes, the eyes would blink once and for No, twice. (I would put one more
condition in it that if the answer were maybe, the eyes would wink). I
understand that the entire report is in the archives of the
neurosurgeon's history. I don't remember all the details of the story
as told to me by my brother, but there were several amazing details that
stuck with me that I will never forget for as long as I live.
The surgeons spent many hours with the volunteers and their families to
generate a list of questions. They wanted to make sure that they would
not run out of questions. The surgeons were with the volunteer victims
up to the last minute of execution, and everyone of the victims were
asked the identical questions right before their head was cut off.
The last qustion was: "Do you think you can answer the questions after
your head is cut off?" There were several different answers. They
were: "Yes.", "I don't know but I will try.", "Why not?", etc. to "I
don't think I can." All those who said they couldn't answer, could
not answer even one question.
The first question that was asked of everyone right after their head was
cut off was: "Do you feel pain?" All those who responded answered
"no." The longest anyone could carry on a conversation was 3 and a half
minutes. They didn't know if that meant that the head couldn't hear or
that it couldn't blink its eyes. When some emotional questions were
asked, the eyes even flowed tears. The neurosurgeons are sure that
emotions are not in your heart but in your brain.
The point of this story is that if your mind is closed, you cannot do
anything. You miss out on a lot in life; you are your own nemeses."
